Tony Dungy resigns at Indy and decides on being a coach for the NCAA, I can guarantee you he'll be picked up in a heartbeat.

Oh, and MSU? Wouldn't be able to compete with the money being thrown at that guy.

Croom just couldn't get it done. Nice guy, but he just couldn't get it done. BTW, does Maryland have a black coach? ......since this seems to be a big issue with you......

No, they have a fat white guy.

Toledo just got rid of theirs, so there is one available if needed....

RE: Sylvester Croom resigns at Mississippi State
This is just another example of the sorry state of college football. Croom took over a team on probation, winning about three games a year. He cleans up & rebuilds the program, wins a bowl game & gets coach of the year honors last year, has a down year this year and gets fired (must have had one heck of an offseason to become such a bad coack so quickly). I could maybe understand it if Mississippi State was some kind of football factory with a proud tradition of winning, but their not.

I went and looked it up. Maryland has NEVER had a black head coach.

Exactly. ....but does it have anything to do with color? Fat Phil took the Vols to the SEC Championship last year and won them a national championship 10 years ago. IIRC, he's the winningest coach in UT history behind Neiland.

....but we're not the ones making an issue out of it. If you think there's some grand conspiracy out there to prevent black coaches in D-1A football, you're mistaken. I heard a black commentator speak about this in the past. He said it wasn't that blacks weren't chosen because they were black, it's that most black coaches don't follow a career track that'll get them to a head coaching position. You can't stay an RB coach forever and jump up to HC. Many HC's have been a combination of graduate assistants, QB coach, RB coach, special teams coach, and then to assistant coach. .....of course that doesn't always work out well either...{cough} Ed Orgeron {cough}

It just ticks me off that my school was singled out for hiring Nutt without interviewing any black coaches. We didn't interview ANY coaches. He contacted Boone after the Orgeron firing and was pretty much given the job over the phone. This PC BS guarantees failure. Athletic directors try to hire the person they think we'll best fit and win them ball games. 1/4 filled stadiums don't pay the bills, nor do they boost enrollment and pride among the alumni....who contribute to the school.

Resigns after meeting with the AD sure sounds like getting fired gracefully to me.

And I wasn't saying it was because he was black (I have no idea how big a part that played, if any at all). But one down year shouldn't cost a coach his job, particularly if the program as a whole is on an ascending arc.

...and that thought has merit, but the university's athletic program isn't there to provide someone with a job; it's there to win games and increase exposure. As much as I hated his guts with the heat of a thousand white-hot suns, Jackie Sherrill was a better coach than Croom. Hell, we fired Cuttcliffe after his first losing season at Ole Miss. Look at Phil Fulmer. That one I do NOT understand. ...but hey, this isn't confined to the SEC. I know a certain independent that would LOVE to get rid of their coach.....if only they didn't have to fork over millions to do so.

Sherrill was a cheater who got the program put on probation. The program was only winning three games a year before Croom took over.

And look how well that worked out for you. Wouldn't have rather kept Cuttcliffe than go though the Orgeron years?

It will be interesting to see how the Notre Dame saga plays out. Weiss certainly hasn't done anything to justify keeping his job, but that buyout is awfully big.

Yeah, I'd rather have kept Cutt than have to suffer through the Orgeron years, but look what it got us. The Right Reverend. Nutt is a much better coach than Cutt.

why does this matter? good coaches should coach, bad coaches should be fired. seems like a good system
