I once worked w/ a guy from Spain who became genuinely upset if he happened to remember the Maine. That was right about the time of the 100th anniversary, so I don't know if he was reminded of the incident from PBS and H-Channel programs, but he was passionate about it.
Of course he still willingly used the US science facilities with no complaint or criticism.
