I'm confident that they'll get SOME first place votes in the AP poll. Do they have any chance whatsoever to get enough to have a split championship? Will certain writers vote Utah #1 as a protest of sorts against the BCS?

Maybe they'll get a few protest votes---but it is a moot point the winner on Tuesday is the automatic champ

BYU in 1984 was no where close to being the best team. Utah is a legit top 3-4 team.

WOW - Ball St wins tues, thier National champs.

BYU won 84 National championship fair & square.
A couple teams could have played them for NC & chose
bowls that payed more money. when # 2,3,4 all lost in
bowl game, everybody screamed it was not fair.

Media might vote Utah #1, thinking thier srewing up BCS.
actually they will be proving how great the BCS is working.
2 NC, can't beat that

The top 10 heading into that bowl season

1. BYU - tied to Holiday Bowl, were not allowed to move to better bowl by contract
2. Oklahoma - Big 8 champ, tied to Orange Bowl, lost
3. Florida - SEC champ, on probation, not eligible for bowl
4. Washington - #2 PAC-10, accepted Orange Bowl bid, won
5. Nebraska - #2 Big 8, accepted Sun Bowl bid, won
6. Ohio St. - Big Ten champ, tied to Rose Bowl, lost
7. South Carolina - Independent, accepted Gator Bowl, lost
8. Boston College - Independent, accepted Cotton Bowl, won
9. Oklahoma St. - #3 Big 8, accepted Gator Bowl, won
10. SMU - #2 SWC, accepted Aloha Bowl, won

Of those teams, Washington or Nebraska would have been the most ideal choices.

BYU barely won the AP poll, outpointing Washington 1160-1140 in the post-bowl poll. BYU started getting the majority of 1st place votes on 11/20 after #1 Nebraska lost their 2nd game to Oklahoma and #2 South Carolina lost their 1st game to Navy.

Wash was invited & turned them down.
6 teams in top 10 could have played them &
turned them down for more money.
any foresight by Wash or Nebraska could
have changed things.

BYU barely beat a mediocre 6-5 team in their bowl game.

When you consider that the bowl matchup was the best they could get, I discount their bowl opponent. You think the system is setup against non-BCS schools now? It was far more difficult back then...

When you consider that in beating Alabama they soundly took out a team that was ranked #1 for a good part of the season I'd say they made a case they could have been playing for the NC. They will get some votes.

Their play shows you that the +1 scenario won't work and you need a deeper pool of teams. They weren't in the top four so they wouldn't have had shot.

Not sure what Ball State has to do with anything. They don't have a resume even close.

Only Boise could have made a similar claim, if they hadn't come up short...

Automatic BCS champ. Not automatic AP champ. There were split national champs in 2003.

USC probably will get some votes. Could Utah and USC combined get more votes then the "National Championship" team?

Texas has plenty of beef. They have no legitimate complaint, however...

Yes, but at least that many will also vote Utah as low as possible as a show of support to the six AQ leagues. I think the highest Utah could be ranked after Thursday is #2, and that depends on Texas losing and the Florida/Oklahoma game being a blow-out in either direction. If Texas wins and the FL/OU game is close or semi-close, Utah will still be ranked #4.

Agreed, Texas will get some votes if they handle OSU as expected.

USC lost to Oregon State. Utah beat Oregon State and is undefeated. Seems like a no brainer how I'd vote.
