If you were lucky enough to attended the Bad Veins cd release party at Fountain Square, then you already know as much. Tickets are on sale now. $29 for three awesome days of late September music. If you haven't been and are a fan of music, I highly encourage it. You'll check out unfamiliar bands in places you may have not stepped foot into. Sure it's primarily held in downtown and OTR, and I know how dangerous y'all feel that area is. But who knows, maybe you'll attend and check out a band for some reason and feel pretty happy about the particular environment you're in and feel compelled to come back.

To me, Midpoint is as much about the music as it is about the revitalization of the downtown area. I know I've barked up this tree before, but if more people frequent downtown it doesn't mean more people are gonna get robbed, it means less. And Midpoint is a conduit. And guess what happens when there's notice of lots of folks congregating downtown? More businesses open. Lots of you complain about the city but don't do anything about it. If you truly cared about this city, there is a lot of fun, everynight. Hell even if you don't care about the city, there still is ample things to do. Rid yourselves of your suburban enclaves and revel in culture. Cincinnati has as much culture as yogurt.

And to further mayhem, just got wind on this

http://ontheriver-dancemf.theprojectmill.com/

If you haven't heard the Seedy Seeds, do it. I actually think a lot of y'all will dig em. Bluegrass, rock, electronic, it's good. I'm soo down for this.

I was wondering when you were going to get around to posting something about this.

Beer and music, always a good combination.

You going to Midpoint? And they got them Scion shuttles (for free) running as well. And you're right Dan, it's never to early for beer and music. 04-cheers

Ba Bump

Anyone attending this week's festivities? Even a one day pass for something like $15 is more than worth it. I've poured over the lineup and still can't decide which shows to check out. There's a freakin' music festival inside our city! Music!! Beer!! 250 bands!! Or you can go to the Northside Tavern and see local boys (whom call Oakland home now) Why? play for free, but the place will probably be packed. I'll be there though. Odd they aren't participating in Midpoint, though they were kinda d!cks last year, at least it seemed.

One of my favorite songs from last year

I was thinking of going to see Kim Taylor this weekend at Northside Tavern. Maybe we'll head downtown, too.

Quote:Cadillac Ranch pulls MPMF acts

By Emily Wendler and Harrison Kreimer • Enquirer contributors • September 26, 2009

DOWNTOWN -- Cadillac Ranch pulled its Saturday night lineup of MidPoint Music Festival acts, replacing them with a DJ around 9 p.m.

The bar, at 38 Fountain Square Plaza, made the decision citing a lack of profit.

Matt Arnott, regional manager for Cadillac Ranch Group, said the decision was made after the bar experienced a 71 percent drop in sales as the first band played.

“There were probably 150 to 170 people in the bar,” he said, “and by the third song there were only 25 people.”

A Cadillac Ranch bartender agreed:

“It was horrible,” said Brian Krekeler. “It would have been fine for a different establishment, like a Sunday morning coffeehouse-type band.

“I lost half my clientele at my bar,'' he added. "I’ve never heard anything clear out a bar so fast.”

This year's festival hosted nearly 277 bands playing in 20 venues between downtown Cincinnati and Over-the-Rhine. Dan McCabe, the executive producer of the three-day fest, called this year's festival a success late Friday.

“Every venue is spilling,” McCabe was quoted as saying. “It’s just a huge success.”

He declined to discuss Cadillac Ranch's decision late Saturday, the final night of the festival.

Gordy Fitzwater, Cadillac Ranch general manager, said the venue had no control over the bands selected to play there.

“They sent me the lineup,” he said. “You’d think somebody would go through them and go, ‘well, this probably wouldn’t be a very good fit for Cadillac Ranch.’”

The band, Mean Tambourines, from Nashville, Tenn., were scheduled to play Cadillac Ranch at 11 p.m. But when their show was canceled, their show was moved to the Mainstay Rock Bar, 301 W. 5th St., in Downtown.

Ryan Truso, the band's lead singer and a guitarist, said he was worried that some of the band's fans would be confused by a change in venue. So, he called 20 to 30 people to alert them to the new location. Despite the inconvenience, he said he was pleased with the new location.

"The type of crowd that came out to the Cadillac Ranch probably would not have liked the Mean Tambourines,'' Truso said. "We didn't have to compete with football and a mechanical bull."

Benita Woodall, stage manager at Mainstay Rock Bar, said the bar had two cancellations for MidPoint bands Saturday.

"Well, to be quite honest ... adding the Mean Tambourines worked out for us,'' Woodall said.

Patrons at Cadillac Ranch were surprised and disappointed by the bar's decision.

"I don't appreciate a bar if they were supposed to let a band play and they kicked them out," said Dina Shields, who was at Cadillac Ranch when the show was halted.

Elizabeth Tigges said The Lighthouse and The Whaler, which completed its set before the show was halted, "were very good actually."

"Some of the songs were a little slow,'' she said of the Cleveland-based band. "Some of the songs were great."

Christian Knausa said he felt bad for the band In Cadeo, which was to play next, "because they had to drive 13 hours to get here,'' he said. The band is based in New York City.

Fitzwater said the decision to cancel the acts was not taken well by Midpoint Music Festival's McCabe.

“I was going to approach him, try to talk to him, went to put my hand on his shoulder. He looked at me and said, ‘don’t you touch me. I’m getting them out of here.’”

“He didn’t want to hear our justification about why we were doing it,” said Arnott.

While he declined to comment about the situation, he noted that the incident did not dampen his enthusiasm for the festival.

“This was a very, very successful MidPoint Music Festival this year,” McCabe said. “It’s a reverberation we will ride to 2010.”

Elise Manahan, Lauren Justice and Kevin Doyle contributed to this report.

Nah. I caught em plenty of times before. I was more interested in the bands I haven't seen. We actually were en route to see em though in the Scion shuttle, but the line was really long. Turns out if you had a three day pass, you could just walk in. Loyal Divide, an electronic band from Chicago, were my favorite of the festival. Baltic Sea, kinda a Sigur Ros type atmospheric band was my second favorite.

I thought the event was a success. Every venue I was in was almost full or full. I spent a majority of my time at the Contemporary Arts Center, which is just an awesome place to hear music. I hope they do it in the future. Inner Peace was my second favorite, and hell the Below Zero Lounge even had a nice stage. I'd say about half the bands that were my favorites were Cincinnati bands I hadn't heard of. The Moon & the Stars and Johnnytwentythree were really really good.

It's not really a bad sign for MPMF. It's just a horrible venue for it. I wanted to check out Lighthouse and the Whaler, but my buddies didn't want to go to Cadillac Ranch. We were there on Friday night briefly, to check out My My My, but they were running behind and we didn't want to be there. Oh, and they place was pretty packed and that was at about 10 o'clock.

More than 15,000 people attended the eighth annual MidPoint Music Festival, which was held in venues downtown, Over-the-Rhine and in Newport last weekend, organizers said Tuesday.

The event featured more than 270 bands from all over the world, almost double the number that performed in 2008, on 23 stages. With ticket prices the same as last year - $29 for a three-day pass - organizers said they saw a 27 percent jump in sales.

"We're happy with the turnout fans showed us," said executive producer Dan McCabe.

Despite rain, capacity crowds filled many venues during the festival, organizers said. The largest stage was the new Topic Design Tent next to Grammer's in Over-the-Rhine, which saw crowds of 1,000 during headlining acts such as the Heartless Bastards - a Cincinnati band that recently relocated to Austin, Texas - and Brooklyn-based Chairlift.

Organizers also reported that 2,800 fans rode in a fleet of Scion xBs (Scion was a festival sponsor) between venues - a 12 percent increase over last year - and that MidPoint's host hotel, Garfield Suites, sold out more than a month in advance.

The organizers say they are planning for a MidPoint Festival next year.
