I honestly don't get it. What does Nova bring that say Temple doesn't? What does Nova bring that any other candidate bring? Their stadium holds what, 4K strong... Help me out here.

Nova is already a member of the Big East. They would obviously have to build and/or play in a different stadium.

Yeah, another source with the name 'a source'. Wait, we are talking about the WV Gazette, so that's OK. Sure, believe what you'd like. I'll stand by my logic that Villanova will not upgrade to a BCS level of football in the foreseeable future because of home stadium feasibility. I think the Villanova alumni would step up and fund this thing in a heartbeat if it were feasible. But it's not as long as Temple controls the Linc on Saturdays. The mention of Franklin Field is laughable. Temple got kicked out, in part, because they played some home games at that facility. And does Penn reschedule to Villanova's field demand?

You evidently have a love affair with Villanova. Good for you. But you're not thinking this out in real terms nor is the WV Gazette even with their rock solid sources.

Love affair with Nova? Hold on there Qwerty1......lets set the record straight here. I have absolutley no "love affair" with Villanova. I've been accused of the same type thing over Marshall. Its simply not true.

Just for the record..... I'm in no way, and no fashion saying the Nova should get the invite to the Big East. The reason I said that is because it was shocking to me to learn that this was seriously being considered. I went on to say that "Some would be happy, while others wouldnt" simply because I knew there would be much divide of opinions if this indeed happened.

Like I stated in the "Remember this Date" thread....Memphis, UCF, ECU etc. are supposedly off the table right now. 'nova doesn't bring in the more high brow audience in Philadelphia, while Temple doesn't bring in the low brow audience. The 2 of 'em don't bring in either segment of the Philadelphia market. What's not to get?

Notice the most important quote in that article....."Play Big East Football Or Leave"

The writer goes on to say........."He was unable to confirm claims made on VUH that the Big East conference will require its basketball schools to field Big East football teams within the next few years if they wish to remain in the basketball conference. If true, Villanova could find itself on the outside looking in unless begins moving in that direction soon. However, if it doesn’t make the jump to Big East football, it likely will be in good company.?

He was unable to confirm them because it didn't happen. besides, the Big East has made it clear in the past they didn't want Georgetown as an expansion team. (Maybe the Ohio Valley will take us... [sarcasm]...)

Here's a random idea. Temple and Nova fans both say they are the better candidates 4 BE expansion. I think Nova is not an option but if its being considered, why not add them both? Nova and Temple would be a good rivalry and would bring the Philly market to the BE. I mean this may not be the best option but it is a option. Any thoughts?

I have serious doubts about that play or leave...

Me too. Is that targeted only at G'town and Nova? Or is that allegedly going to force the basketball schools to start up football? And considering that an expulsion vote probably takes 3/4s of the membership, good luck getting it. That rumor is silly.

Also, why would they not want G'town? G'town could play at RFK stadium and probably has a better following in DC than Nova does in Philly. Certainly folks in DC go watch G'town basketball; I have a feeling they'd go watch G'town football. DC is a college football starved town -- lots and lots of people from around the country who love college football and Maryland is the only team. I think folks would go to the games just to see college football, even if they aren't G'town fans. Certainly G'town could schedule good OOC games to put crowds in RFK.

I think exploring if Nova can move up in football is pretty smart. 16 mouths to feed is better that 17 or 18. Uconn sure was succesful moving up. Plus if you have 9 all soprt teams...the voting imapsse cou;d be over with and you could theoreticly expand at a later date adding whomever...

I till wonder why the Big East doesn't just add ECU or Temple for Football only...either one would agree to it. Temple other non football sports already have another home.

I have a hard time believing that all of the candidates are off the table considering what Memphis was told and what is needed to start up the Big East Network. I could see some resistance to UCF, from USF and from schools that were burned by them when it came to scheduling. The same thing happened with ECU in regards to Syracuse and Cincinnati but since ECU has a different, and far superior, administration, I don't know if that is an issue anymore or not.

You're not serious, are you? You didn't just ask what winning football games has to do with being BCS ready, did you? You've got to be kidding me? FBS teams that lose to cross-town FCS rivals should lose FBS status at the game's end. They certainly don't deserve an invite to a BCS conference for it, and only an idiot would assume otherwise...

What is needed to start up a Big East network? Production facilities. An outlet for distributing the network for the masses such as a cable or broadcast partner. A channel designation from the FCC. Agreements from cable/service providers to carry the channel(s) and provide money to the network for doing so based on the number of subscribers. Talent, crews to produce and create the product. Several other such things but not one of them has anything to do with needing Memphis, UCF or especially ECU. You are truly gullible if you believe otherwise. What is it you think Memphis was told btw? Curious to hear that one.

Now THIS is very interesting. Maybe pressure some schools to upgrade and build a conference from that. I know that Georgetown would upgrade if they could, that would be great.

RE: Villanova being targeted by the Big East
Adding Villanova is akin to adding Duke without the prestige, football history, and national following. I went to a Duke game this past season. They were playing GaTech with a potential bowl birth on the line. The stadium was sparsely filled and there was no real football atmosphere. There were a good amount of recruits at the game and I was thinking, other than getting a great degree, why in the world would a recruit with other options want to play in front of such a crowd. The Big East would be making a huge mistake to add a small private school to thier football lineup. The best thing Villanova has going for it is what the Big East already has, it's basketball program and tv market.

RE: Villanova being targeted by the Big East
There are examples of what Villanova can be if they could get the facilities to do it.

BC is a small campus located in a suburb not to keen on having college football in town. They've grown up and out of the Big East and make more money now than any member of the BE. Their stadium is built into other athletic buildings in the small space available but is more than adequate and has several games per year broadcast from there.

Cincinnati has grown themselves up into a BCS program even with much in state and in city competition from the pros and "bigger" college football programs --and they also have a small stadium with expansion issues.

UConn is another example. A 1-AA program a decade ago that was able to build facilities and grow themselves into a more than solid program in the Big East, now averaging 35-40,000 a game within just a few years of moving up.

Wake Forest--a small school and campus with no room for an on campus stadium. They've built a 35,000 or so seat stadium nearby which was recently upgraded on the press box side and is a very nice facility. They've had some football success ,even winning the ACC and in a much smaller community than Philadelphia and from not so great football tradition.

So your comparisons are two large state schools, one of them the state flagship; a private school that has been playing major college football since 1939 and has a Heisman winner; and another small private school that has also been playing major college football since 1939, was a founding ACC member, and just recently won its second ever ACC championship?

Yeah, Villanova should be about like Wake Forest without the 70 years to build a major fanbase and the 50 years to build conference football rivalries. Neither BC or Wake have particularly good attendance, this despite BC's success as a program. And Wake has been horrible for decades.

Sounds like Villanova would be a tremendous success. Maybe they'll average 18,000 at Penn Stadium and be marginally more competitive than Wake most years. That will sure boost the Big East's profile and add all of that "value." Villanova's value is in their basketball program; the only reason they are being pushed by the Catholic schools to move up is because the Catholics don't want to be outvoted, and they think that football playing Villanova will still vote with the Catholic bloc.
