Hard to tell, because many schools use the Common App as one option, but have not released their separate app--Rice is one of these.

One of the other schools is likely Southwestern, who have not posted their 2011 app as yet. SMU has posted theirs.

Considering he wants to study music, it appears, that may limit some of his options. And thus could involve Rice.

A friend's wife is a professional oboe player. She said she thinks Sheppard is a better school than Julliard.

My dad used to run the symphony--professional consensus I think is that Rice's music school is much better than Julliard if you're wanting to be an orchestra player. For soloists, especially strings, Julliard is still the place to some extent, but there's no better place to learn to play in an orchestra than inside the hedges.

My nephew will be a senior percusionist at Oberlin this fall. Rice was on his short list, but Sheppard told him he couldn't have a double major outside of music.

I'd be surprised if it is really prohibited. I knew people 5+ years ago that at least made the attempt, I can't honestly remember if either succeeded. Certainly at that time no students were encouraged to do a double major simply because it is extremely difficult to manage, and often one would do better just to make a choice if the double major is due to indecision.

Small point, but it's actuallythe Shepherd School, rather than Sheppard. It's named after the same family as the street that parallels Greenbriar. I know some of the Shepherd descendants.

A) Thanks for that George. It had been bugging me, but given my recent "matriculation" post, I chose to leave this one alone.

B) With regards to not being permitted to double major, might that have something to do with pursuing a B.Mus. vs. a B.A.?

D'oh. I imagine studying music at this level requires such dedication and time that they really want you to focus. In my nephew's case, he loves music but isn't sure he wants to be a professional, full-time musician.

I believe everyone I know who doubled got a BA rather than a BM, but I am not entirely sure--I THINK it's not encouraged but tacitly permitted once you're in, on a case-by-case basis.
