New to the Board. Howdy!
Hey everybody,
I'm new to the board and a new Owl as of 2010. I just posted my thoughts in the texas-rice game thread, but figured a general introduction was in order.
I'm starting my Ph.D. in the Philosophy department, tentative class of '15. I do ethics, political philosophy, and existentialism, if anybody cares...?
I'm coming from San Diego. Raised there, played left guard and threw discus and shotput in high school out there, and went to UC San Diego for my BA. It was ridiculous to be at a school of 30,000 students that was D2 and had no football team. Glad to be at a school with a major team. I'm confident I'll be at every home game
President Leebron joked at our introduction that Houston has two seasons: indoors and outdoors. Please, please, tell me it ain't true!
Anyways, hello to all, and I'll see ya around these parts.

Welcome. I think it's very cool to have a Philosopher-Jock active on our board!

RE: New to the Board. Howdy!
Another OL on board! Clearly the overall quality of the board has just increased!
And no, the 2 seasons isn't quite right: this is Texas and there is football season, spring football, and off-season. Some prefer Summer, rainy, and July&August (which is also very true). And every now and then an old timer will remind us that Houston has its day or two of winter every 4 or 5 years...
Regardless, welcome aboard! Hit the tailgates before the games at HRS (historic Rice Stadium) and grab a beer or three before heading on in for the game!

Welcome aboard. If you don't run into another Philosopher-Jock by then, you will be very pleased come the (belated) start of baseball season in February.

Welcome. With the exception of the LG thing, as a football playing Californian, you get entry into the special group.

RE: New to the Board. Howdy!
Thanks everybody!
I'll end with a philosophy joke:
A boy is about to go on his first date, and is nervous about what to talk about. He asks his father for advice. The father replies: ``My son, there are three subjects that always work: food, family, and philosophy.''
The boy picks up his date and they go to a soda fountain. Ice cream sodas in front of them, they stare at each other for a long time, as the boy's nervousness builds. He remembers his father's advice, and asks the girl: ``Do you like potato pancakes?'' She says ``No,'' and the silence returns.
After a few more uncomfortable minutes, the boy thinks of his father's suggestion and turns to the second item on the list. He asks, ``Do you have a brother?'' Again, the girl says ``No'' and there is silence once again.
The boy then plays his last card. He thinks of his father's advice and asks the girl, ``If you had a brother, would he like potato pancakes?''

I see you belong to the cracker barrel school of philosophy. Welcome.
