Incredible how fast he recovered. His desire to get back on the field this season tells me all I need to know on his chances of getting another year.

This almost makes me more nervous for him. This seems almost humanly impossible to be this far in his rehab. It has been what, 7 weeks?
...That is beyond unbelievable .

Gotta admire the heart. I wonder what the suprise is? The way he said it makes me think it's something more than he plans on returning for the UConn game or something like that.

RE: Vidal Hazelton Update
IIRC, he tweeted that Bearcat fans had another surprise coming right after the Carswell transfer went public (before it fell through). I wonder if it is that same one. Also IIRC, the rule wasn't just for this season, next year's USC seniors can also transfer without sitting out a year.

In fact, it appears the rule allows current USC JRs or SRs to transfer after USC's season ends and then play for their new team in this season's bowl games!

Quote:Players have until September 10th to drop a class at USC and withdraw from school. Players would have to register for classes at the institution they are transferring to, which can be as late as October for schools on the quarter system. Players could also possibly compete for USC during the regular season and, after finishing the semester, transfer in time to participate in a bowl game for another school.

I'm pretty sure the surprise is that he's going to try getting back on the field soon, not about a transfer.

Great to see if Vidal is able to come back. Bad to see that we blew Munchie's redshirt year for all that action he's getting.

Just ran across this from the what-might-have-been files. I still don't know if this is the surprise Hazelton was talking about or not (see OP), but the timing sounds plausible (although we now know definitively that Hazelton won't be back):

Quote:(6/17/11) No 5 Best Offseason Development: Brice Butler Returns to Program

After last season, wide receiver Brice Butler had all but made up his mind.

He was going to transfer to the University of Cincinnati and join former Trojan wide receiver Vidal Hazelton.

For USC, though loaded at the position, the loss of Butler represented the second most experienced wideout on that team.

And with bodies of any sort, much less a quality skill player, at a premium, the Trojans would definitely come out on the short end of this transaction.

But then Butler had a change of heart.

After convincing Lane Kiffin of his sincerity, Butler was reinstated and his value was immediately felt on the practice field.

Now Butler is hoping that value will be felt in the fall when the games count.

So do Trojans fans.

Brice Butler

Strangely reminiscent of the above referenced Brandon Carswell situation many of you will recall:

Quote:USC football: WR Carswell says he’s ‘here to stay’
August 4th, 2010, 7:00 am · posted by Michael Lev, staff writer

USC junior receiver Brandon Carswell said additional playing time wasn’t the reason he was close to transferring to Cincinnati — so close, in fact, that he bought a plane ticket before changing his mind.

“It was just (the prospect of) a new beginning for me,” Carswell said Tuesday. “There was a lot going on in my life. Then, when I do get my opportunities, I get hurt.”

Carswell missed most of spring practice because of a hamstring injury, missing out an opportunity to impress the new coaching staff.

In two years of limited duty, Carswell has six receptions for 28 yards and five punt returns for 31. He played a lot last season but mostly in running situations.

Carswell said his parents played “a major role” in his decision to stay. Coach Lane Kiffin emphasized how close Carswell is to graduating. (He needs five more classes.)

Kiffin implied last week that he’d sign off on Carswell transferring next year once he earned his degree. But Carswell said he’s “here to stay” and “would have left already” if he was going to go.

Brandon Carswell

Between the three of them, we almost had a very different looking receiving corps. Instead we ended up with about a half game from Hazelton total. Oh well, I'm good with our current WRs especially those likely to get pt....
