Notre Dame OT Matt Romine may play 1 year at Tulsa
According to the Tulsa World, Romine, former Tulsa Union H.S. player, suffered a bunch of injuries which limited his playing time but he still managed to be the starting OT for Notre Dame. Finished his undergraduate degree but has one year of elgibility remaining.

Isn't there an ex ND All American defensive tackle Mike Fanning employed by TU? Also, our other transfer offensive tackle is a relative of HOF player Ollie Matson. That's 6-6 320lb Joe King. We seem to be getting bigger.

Question: Since Romine is only here a year, I wonder if he played Defense at Union or if he'd want to? Since we are transitioning to a four front, I wonder if this was a strategic transfer for a number of reasons? Anyone know if MR played/plays defense?

Looked around at his old info when he was coming out and on his ND bio and never could find anything about him playing defense in high school. Not typically done at Union and Jenks though!

I'm sure Romine is a very good player, but its hard to figure. Unless he provides an immediate impact, we are faced with a one year player that isn't familiar with the system, may not play a lick or we have to retrain to do the job. I hope he provides that impact, but if he starts and gets the lions minutes instead of an underclassman and proves to be just adequate, we will be somewhat hamstrung in 2012 with a less than polished line and only 2 probable starters back. I hope he's enough of an impact/difference maker to beat one of the nonconf "big three" teams we face.

My concern is on the DLine where we have a new crew of coaches, drills, terms and alignments/assignments. We add a base system lineman and take away an invert safety from a secondary that we finally saw gel. My opine and my paranoia, I suppose.

When I watched the Kingfisher @Hennessey game, I never realized that I would be watching 2 future Tulsa players, your son and the Kingfisher QB.

Hennessey has an outstanding coaching staff and the coaching staff took Hennessey to heights never achieved before, a state championship. Millwood had all those studs but Hennessey beat them.

My very deep thanks to you and your coaching colleages at Hennessey.

Thanks brother! It was an awesome experience and definitely not expected. Won an 8-man title back in '96, but we were more talented and just better than everyone else, didn't matter much what we did as a coaching staff. This year's title was so much more special, because the kids over-achieved to get the job done! Never seen a team come together and play for each other like these guys did.

Patterson is a great kid and could end up being a special player for Tulsa at some point in his career. Love it that Coach B ventured out of the Tulsa area and chose to bring in some western Oklahoma kids. Down the road I think it's really going to pay off for Tulsa football!!

luetgen, since you come on this board occasionally, could you give us a little "inside" info on your sons experiences as a pre-college player and then when he gets to TU, his feelings. Some of us ex-jocks are so far removed from our college playing days, it might help enlighten us. This board is pretty dead most of the time, but is a refuge for giving our thoughts about the state of TU athletics.

Just an occasional heads up. I mostly post on rivals, but visit here to see if anyone has pertinent info we haven't gotten yet. Gotta have my TU athletics "fix".

Unlike very many good Hennessey teams, I think this Hennessey Coaching staff brought in and rotated players on both offense and defense. The coaching staff put the right players in the right spot. The major problem I have seen with coaches at a small school is to pick the best players and play them and ignore other (less talented) players who could provide some rest for the starters.

Years ago, Hennessey should have won 3 baseball titles. But the coach scheduled few games and always started his best pitcher who eventually signed a contract with the New York Mets. When it came time for the playoffs, Hennessey always won the first game all three years but lost in the second--because Hennessey started a pitcher that hadn't pitched a game before. There were at least 3 other players on that team that could have been good pitchers too. The coach should have scheduled more game and let them pitch.

This was also a problem for the football team in years past...

For Hennessey, the smallest school in 2A to win a state championship, it had to have both--good players and a good coaching staff. Hate to be a homer but Hennessey has had many great athletes in the past, but Hennessey did not have the coaching staff in place to exploit it.

RE: Notre Dame OT Matt Romine may play 1 year at Tulsa
Thanks for the love Tallgrass. It definitely took the entire team to come around for us during the playoffs to win the title. Many of our average players really played big down the stretch! All the credit has to go to Joe McCulley (our supt) and Shannon Watford (our HC) Joe had some success back in the 80's and a group of guys still living in the area and several that played for him, decided to entice him back to get the program back. After becoming supt during that 1st year he decided to bring in Coach Watford and allowed him to coach the kids hard! In his 4 years he has developed a toughness in these kids that has allowed them to over achieve.

As far as Derrick goes, his first 2 years we were at Locust Grove and he started at center and LB his freshman year. His soph year we moved him to TE because he has great hands and he attended QB camps with his older brother Matt (playing at Army) and catching footballs 24/7! He was a great target at 6'1" and 220 and he continued to play LB on defense. His junior year we moved to Hennessey and he began to grow some more and we kept him at TE on offense but had to start putting his hand on the ground and played him at DE. Prior to the playoffs we eventually moved him to LT on offense to help protect his brother at QB! During this time he was a little over 6'2" and 240. He started to grow again during the offseason and summer prior to his senior year and by the time 2-a-days rolled around he was pushing 6'4" and weighed 275. Defensively we moved him inside and he played the 3-tech and every know and then we would play him at NG when we went to a 3 front. Offensively we played him all over the line mostly depending on where we needed him and who we needed him to match up with. If there wasn't a match up issue then we would play him at guard because its fun to pull a 6'4" 275 athlete in high school football!! (that was a big key in our victory in the state championship game vs Davis)

As far as post season honors Derrick was the #1 player in 2A All Star by Class and was named to the OCA All State Team, he was named Defensive MVP of our District, he was 1st team All State in the Tulsa World at DT, he was selected to play in the Oilbowl in June at center, he was named CTBS/ESPN All Star and was 2nd team All State and 1st team Little All City by the Daily Oklahoman. Derrick also qualified for the State Powerlifting Championships this winter and was the State Champion in 2A Shot Put last spring in his first year to throw and also finished 5th in the state in discus. He's a 4.0 student and will also be his class Valedictorian this May.

Okay there is a background on Derrick, probably more than you wanted but he's a great kid and well deserving. He loved watching Tulsa's scrimmage yesterday and can't wait to get on campus this summer and start competing for playing time!!

Not true. In my time at Union Dom Franks, Brock Dixon, Zack Snider, Bohannon, Kelvin Cato, Brad Glenn, Casey Thurber, and the Pearson twins all saw significant time on both sides of the ball. And those are just the ones i could come up with off the top of my head.
