Football starters - anyone care to take a stab?
Well, I'm bored this morning, so I thought I'd take a stab at the starters...
Offensive line: T's Hooey/Hoff, G's Martinez/Bujnoch, C Davis
Starting unit has a chance to be good. I've always said that every position will improve, except C (more a compliment to Kelce than indictment on Davis). Davis needs to get bigger, and not get pushed around so much, and he'll have a solid season (IMO). As everyone says, the issues begin if and when we get into the second team. Hope Cureton (G), Sprague (C, but Martinez moving over if need be seems more likely at this point), and maybe Schlomer or Lefeld (T) can step it up this Summer.
Tight end/wide receiver: Annen, KT, Woods, Lewis
TE seems a tossup between Robinson and Annen. I tilted toward Annen because Robinson can't seem to shake his blocking rep, and IMO that's important for how much CBJ likes to run. Kelce's right there too, if healthy. Any one of those three is promising, so the dilemma is a good one to have.
WR, KT and Woods seem written in stone. We'll see who emerges as the third. There are a bunch of guys who could arguably claim that spot - JUCO Julian, who's got good size, Hilton/Woodard are really coming on in their latter career stages, and obviously a lot of good ones coming in.
Running back and Quarterback: Pead and Zach. Not a lot of doubt there.
Defensive Line: E's Stewart/Giodorno, T's Wolfe/Hughes
Not a lot of doubt with the starters, but I'm excited. This is the deepest, and probably best coached, position on the team. Mills, Taylor, Trigg, Stepp, Lozano and Beard will provide plenty of impact while the starters are off the field.
Linebackers: Shaffer, Bomar and Pooler
UC medical knows their stuff like none other, so if they think Pooler's a go, he's penciled in as far as I'm concerned. Ben certainly has the credentials. It'll be interesting to see how Blair, Tentman and the two freshmen have an impact. This position all the sudden looks MUCH different than it did last year (in a good way).
Secondary: CB's Battle/Johnson, S's Frey/Murray, NB Williams
I included NB because UC employs it a lot. There is a lot of competition in the secondary, which is a good thing. But, I'd like to see guys clearly step up as starters. Interested to see the impact Murray, White and Chenault make.
