RE: Conference USA Athletic Budgets
Florida Atlantic has had more success in football than International has. Their "attendance" has been worse, though. It'll be interesting to see if the 65+ crowd in Boca supports them at all once they open the new stadium. Their previous field wasn't even located in the same county as the school.

If by some act of God, Central Florida does leave this conference, I like Florida International better than FAU. I'm not enamored with either school, but you have to have a presence in Florida.

Your in FLL? Where we watching the Memphis-USM game? Bru's?

What Bru's are left? The one in Coral Springs/Margate died last I heard.

Atlantic and Federal in Pompano is the one I usually go to or the one in Deerfield. I think there's like 6 or 7 left. Fine then...Duffys?

I see your point about FAU and I am located right in between their campus and stadium if you can even call that a stadium but I still like FAU more than FIU. I just feel in the long run FAU would bring more than FIU. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. I went to the last game at Lockhart last year and there was NOBODY there. We will see once they open the new stadium.

This has probably been posted before, but it's the off season and TOGC needs more excuses to make fun of everyone.

There's some joker over on the Conference Expansion thread who said that App State and their $14M athletic budget would be a natural fit for C-USA.

03-lmfao

Whats so funny about a Div I-AA team's Athletic Budget?

Virtually every team that moved up from Div I-AA to Div I-A level saw their athletic budgets soar.

Heck...Appalachian State's Div I-AA budget is almost twice as large as UCF's initial Div I-A budget when UCF made the leap to I-A in the late 90's.

Its safe to say that Appalachian State's budget would JUMP if they made the move to Div I-A...and if they landed in CUSA...it might be a weird experience for some...as they actually have fans that SHOW UP inside their football stadium for games!! (I know...a rarity at some current CUSA schools).

Yeah, go ahead and make fun of your conference brother-en in UAB and Tulane. Yeah they are struggling because of football mediocrity on the field and I'm sure they arent to happy with it either. Give UAB credit, they are building there own on campus stadium which is sure to increase their attendance.

Besides, for APP its not hard to give away or sell 20K tickets that are $10 or a can of corn for getting in the game. Lets see how good that support would be with $35-$45 dollar tickets during times the program is struggling like you see with Tulane and UAB. In my opinion, the bad far outweigh the good for App State. Did you ever stop to think why the Sun Belt or Mac has never approached them? I mean why would the Mac want UMass over App State? Why would the Sunbelt show no interest? Think about that. There is a reason. Have you ever been to Boone, NC? Do you really think they truly average the "per game" they claim? Or is it just "tickets sold"?

The good things about Appy:

1. Nice football attendance

The bad things about Appy:

1. No easy way to get there.
2. Terrible basketball fan support
3. CUSA already has a team in North Carolina
4. Budget is nowhere near CUSA minimum and is more in line with the bottom half of the Sunbelt.
5. Football stadium is basically a glorified high school stadium
6. No TV market
7. No real upside for growth.
8. University of Charlotte who will have the TV market is merely 5-6 years away from FBS football and will most certainly be more valuable.

Appy shouldn't even be in the conversation. They are so far down the list its not even funny.

You look at the overall makeup of any school mentioned here and its clear that ODU is #1 and is likely at the top of the list for CUSA. Its really not even an argument. Here are five institutions that CUSA would approach for CUSA-East if there was a need.

1. Navy
2. ODU
3. Temple
4. FAU
5. FIU

You could buy eustacy a new suit lol......seriously, though, at least your AD recognizes that you have a football program....

I agree with Transitt, and will add our President is worse. If we ever
shed this dead 2 layers of snake skin, and get a President and AD with the understanding of how important Football Potential is, we may become an all around good sports program.

Basketball has their REAL support, no doubt.

KnightLight,

Take a look at these picture and tell me if this looks like 27K in a 20K stadium like they claim. Just saying...

I'd throw Air Force, New Mexico, and UNLV on the list on the West side, but I completely agree wit your list.

Thanks...as while every team/program has pluses and minuses...and how CUSA will most likely need new teams in the future that actually have FANS that show up to games...sad that some CUSA fans are taking cheap shots at Appalachian State...while ignoring the embarrassing situation (i.e. pathetic football attendance) at some current CUSA schools.

:( Sorry for Tulane. We're in a bit of an athletics slump lately. But considering we just had 5200 vs LSU I'm not worried. When we win again we'll eclipse some attendance competitors.

i appreciate you have a little crush on Appy State...and that's all sweet and stuff...but they're not getting in CUSA...sorry.

hell, Memphis had it's worst season in a LONG time and we had something like 23k per game...i miss DeAngelo and the 40k crowds.

App State is doing a great snake oil sales job. Their stadium seats 22k and their athletic budget is $16,185,310 which would be at the bottom of even CAA football (about the same as Maine). I dont have anything against App State but seriously come on.

RE: Conference USA Athletic Budgets
For a program that has NO shot at CUSA you guys sure do talk about them a lot.

Stadium seats 22K with 750 club seats and 18 boxes. The difference is these are full and in the hill that can hold another 7-8K. 3,000 seats will be added to the North endzone for the 2011 season. Where does ASU's average regular season attendance fall in CUSA? At 29K that would be 6th. Note this is playing NC Central, Elon, and Wofford.

Knight brings up a good point about budgets, do you guys really think ASU's budget wouldn't increase as revenue streams would increase in an FBS conference?

We can rehash the ASU rumor thread from a couple of months ago. But really what would that acccomplish except for pissing off the Marshall fans, which I'm fine with ;-).

While I agree with that KL often seems to have the mental capacity of a 1st grader, I feel obligated to point out that that photo is from pregame and our "fans" don't get into the stadium until the end of the first quarter.

05-nono

I doubt it, but the UH vs. UCF game in 2009 was even worse than the above picture. A ranked team came to town, and one of the grandstands was maybe half full.

Point being, KL shouldn't think UCF is above attendance smack. Glass houses, IMO.

The only university who can really talk football attendance smack in this conference is ECU. As far as attendance goes, it's ECU then everyone else. Sucks to say it from a rival's perspective, but it is what it is.
