ATP Masters in Cincy names a new tournament director
Do any of you guys know this former Bengal executive, Vince Cicero?

As a 25 year volunteer out at the ATP tournament, I was disappointed to see Bruce Flory let go. And that was echoed by many other volunteers. I'm surprised that someone with no experience with the ATP or WTA was hired to run one of the Top 13 tournaments in the world.

He came and spoke to my Intro to Sport Admin class last year. If they hired him, then their focus was on marketing and getting more fans in the seats. Not sure that would have been much of an issue with them doing both men's and women's tournaments the same week now. I think you will definitely see him out in front promoting the event.

Why did they let him go? I thought the Florys made the tournament run like a well-oiled machine.

.....

* Bengals marketing man Vince Cicero has fled, to run the tennis tournament in Mason. TML always felt Cicero should rename himself Custer. Vince Custer, here. Anybody want a lux box? We got plenty. The tennis is possibly an easier sell.

The USTA purchased the tournament and they wanted someone, in their mind, who could take it to the next level. Don't know the specifics but seems pretty strange that they hired someone with zero experience running a multi-million dollar tournament with players, press, and crowds from around the globe.

Yeah, I was expecting someone from outside Cincinnati with major tennis tournament experience. Seems like a surprising hire. This tournament has come a long way, and it seems like Flory got kinda raw deal. But like flea said, hard to imagine it being tough to sell the one week combined tourney.
