Whether he is hurt or has busted mechanics, he can't take up a roster spot right now.

Quote:CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds have placed left-hander Aroldis Chapman on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed pitching shoulder.

The Reds think Chapman's ailment has contributed to his wildness. The team called up reliever Jordan Smith on Monday before the start of a two-game series against the Chicago Cubs.

Chapman came in with a 9-2 lead in the ninth inning Sunday against St. Louis and walked four of the five batters he faced, throwing 18 balls out of 23 pitches. He hit 100 mph on the radar gun a few times, but his velocity was down overall.

In his last four appearances, Chapman has walked 12 batters and retired only four. Twice, he had to leave the game without getting a batter out.

After his previous outing the Reds (Dusty and/or Price) were explicit in saying his problem isn't physical even though he was topping out at around 96 even after getting some rest. As I suggested a few outings ago, they've now got to do something. I guess they'd rather have Price work with him here than Power in AAA, so they decided to go with a case of shoulder inflammation (which is probably technically true, but also technically true of nearly every major league pitcher after nearly every outing). He still might end up re-habbing in the minors before he gets back with the Reds.

Too bad for Willis getting hurt or he might have gotten the call - unless the Reds are now set on keeping him as a starter. Smith didn't look great earlier with the Reds this year and didn't really pitch that much in AAA, but I think we'll see better from him anyway.

I'm curious why you love when the reds play against Zambrano.

Zambrano has won 5-consecutive starts at Great American BP, dating to 7/29/07 - posting a 0.75 ERA (3 ER/36.0 IP) Zambrano's nine wins at Great American Ball Park are the most by any opposing pitcher.

Zambrano also on a 12-1 streak since late last year having an ERA in the mid 2's over that span.

Haha jesus stats are like porn to some of you guys.

I know he has been tough on the Reds at times, but when that guy blows up it is epic.

I really have a hard time rooting for Gomes any more because I keep thinking, "Ok that has to be the last start he'll get." But then Dusty just keeps running him out there. Haven't any reporters asked him what the hell he is thinking. Can't believe Janish isn't playing more either, Renteria has lost a few steps not just one.

Walk to renteria killer for Big Z that inning. Soriano showed why he is worth all that money playing left field right there.

Gomes is locked in the lineup for the next few weeks. Damn I hope that gets him hot. If he can get hot, the Reds offense becomes even more intimidating, not that they needed it.

LeCure is worth every one of the pennies they are paying him. He is best suited for the role that they tried to put Leake in.

Reds 7, Cubs 4 after 6 1/2
8:52 pm, May 16, 2011 by jfay

Homer Bailey was not nearly as dominant in his third start back the disabled list as he was in the first two. He went six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits. He walked three and struck out four. He threw 107 pitches, 67 strikes.

Bailey overcame a bout of wildness to pitch a scoreless first. After striking out Kosuke Fukudome to start the game, Bailey walked the bases loaded. In his previous tow starts, he had walked a one over 13 innings. But Bailey struck out Alfonso Soriano after falling behind 2-0 and got Marlon Byrd on three pitches to leave them loaded.

Bailey faced the minimum from the second to the fifth.

But Carlos Pena led off the fifth with an infield hit. Koyie Hill followed with hit-and-run single, sending Pena to third. Carlos Zambrano followed with a chopper that Scott Rolen fielded. But his throw home to get Pena was wild. Bailey got Fukudone to ground to as well. This time, the Reds got Hill. Darwin Barney made it 2-0 with an RBI single.

The Cubs added two in the sixth. Byrd singled with one out. Pena followed with his fourth home run — two of them have come against the Reds — to make it 4-0.

Through five, the Reds had one hit. Bailey singled in the third inning.

That changed quickly in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Miguel Cairo took a called third strike to start the inning.

Drew Stubbs followed with smash off third baseman Aramis Ramirez’s glove for a single. Edgar Renteria walked. Joey Votto followed with an RBI single. Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce also singled run in to make it 4-3.

Scott Rolen followed with a drive to left the Soriano back-pedaled to get in position for. But the ball carried over his head for a gift double.

That tied it at 4-4 and ended Zambrano’s night. The Cubs brought in Marcos Mateo. His first pitch was wild, allowing Bruce to score from third to give Reds a 5-4 lead. Two pitches later, Jonny Gomes lined one out to right-center to make it 7-4. It was Gomes’ first home run since April 17.

Bad timing for Willis
6:17 pm, May 16, 2011 | Written by jfay

Left-hander Dontrelle Willis would likely have gotten the call to take Aroldis Chapman’s spot on the roster.

“We talked about it,” Reds manager general manager Walt Jocketty said. “But he tweaked a groin the other day. It didn’t make sense to bring him up.”

Willis will probably not go on the disabled list, but he’ll miss his next start.

Willis is 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA in seven starts at Louisville. He’s limited left-handers to a .224 average against him.

More on Chapman
5:16 pm, May 16, 2011 | Written by jfay

I’m sure Aroldis Chapman has some shoulder inflammation. Most pitchers, particularly hard throwers do, in May. But in Chapman’s case, it’s a way to get him back to throwing strikes without sending him to Louisville.

The Reds placed Chapman on the 15-day disabled list. He won’t throw off the mound for a week or so. Chapman was shut down for four days earlier in the season.

“It’s kind like we did last time,” trainer Paul Lessard said. “We’ll treat him to get it calmed down so he has a pain-free range of motion before we start cranking. After a couple of days, it should be calmed down.”

Chapman did not have an MRI.

“It was symptomatic like it was the last time,” Lessard said.

Dusty Baker thinks Chapman will return when the two weeks are up.

“I’m very confident it will be,” Baker said. “He’s in good spirits. He knows he needs it and we need it. If he comes back after 15 days, we have four months to go. It’s better to take care of it now.”

Chapman says he’s been dealing with the problem for some time.

“The last two weeks I’ve been feeling discomfort in the my shoulder,” he said through a translator.

Chapman’s last good outing came on April 27. In the four appearances since then — over roughly two weeks — he’s walked 12 in 1 1/3 innings.

“I could not make the 100 percent effort that I wanted to,” he said. “I believe that was creating my failure on my command.”

Chapman did not mention the discomfort to the Reds until today. The last time Chapman has inflammation he kept it quiet.

“He wasn’t as reluctant,” Baker said. “He’s learning more to be more honest about it. Where he came from, they don’t say much about about anything. It’s a cultural thing as much as physical thing.”

Chapman said he had a similar problem in Cuba.

“I believe the majority throwers have this kind of issue,” he said
