Isnt that the thing Martin played in before his monster year?

Gates invited to try out for World University Games team

UC forward Yancy Gates has been invited to try out for the USA team in the World University Games that will be held Aug. 12-23 in Shenzhen, China. Training camp to select the 12-member team is July 30-Aug. 8 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Purdue coach Matt Painter is the head coach, assisted by Cuonzo Martin of Missouri State and Brad Stevens of Butler. Gates, from Withrow High School, will be a senior at UC in the fall. He averaged 11.9 points and 6.9 rebounds last season for the Bearcats.

Both Kenyon Martin and Pete Mickeal played on the 1999 world games team. Oliver Purnell (coach at UD at the time) was the head coach.

Quote:Kenyon Martin led all USA players in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.9 ppg. and 6.6 rpg. while Brendan Haywood averaged 10.9 ppg. and 6.3 rpg. and led the squad in blocked shots with 1.4 bpg. Pete Mickeal checked in as the team's third leading scorer, 9.1 ppg., and led the U.S. in steals, 3.3 spg.

They had open practice and I seen kmart eat these kids lunch. that center from texas--who's name escapes me was there also. he was suppose to be an AA.

Hearing a new coaches voice in his ear and to go up against the best may be the jolt he needs to go to the next level.
do anyone have a list of all the people who are trying out?

That Texas center's name is Chris Mihm. He and Brendan Haywood from UNC were the centers on that team.

Good luck Dizz. Don't be afraid to throw an elbow or two, they like to see that kind of stuff.

Yancy Gates tries out for World University Games spot
5:37 PM, May. 17, 2011

For Yancy Gates, being invited to try out for the USA team that will compete in the World University Games this summer is a validation of the progress he made as a player last season.

“It says to me that I did something good last year,” Gates said.

The University of Cincinnati senior forward will travel to the U.S. Olympic Training Center to try out for the 12-member team from July 30-August 8. The team, which will be coached by Purdue’s Matt Painter, Butler’s Brad Stevens and Missouri State’s Cuonzo Martin will compete in Shenzhen, China from Aug. 12-23.

Gates, who averaged 11.9 points and 6.9 rebounds last season, said he believes his one-game suspension at Pittsburgh on Feb. 5 actually helped him to become a better player.

“I thought I got better as the year went on,” Gates said. “Even with the suspension, I came back and played better. I didn’t really let it get to me. You don’t want to get suspended but I think it gave me time to sit by myself and think about what’s going on and what I need to do to help the team and myself get better.”

As a result of the suspension, UC coach Mick Cronin said, “We were able to help him talk through some things. He came out of it refreshed. He just had a better attitude mentally.”

Gates, a Withrow High School graduate, said during the NCAA Tournament in March that he would not make himself available for the NBA draft and never wavered from the decision, unlike some players who say they’re going to stay only to change their minds a few weeks later and enter the draft. That’s what Lance Stephenson did in 2010 when he left UC after one year and was drafted in the second round by the Indiana Pacers.

But Gates remains committed to finishing what he started at UC next season and making himself a better player so that when he does get to the NBA – if in fact he does – he’ll be prepared.

“I just don’t want to be a player who leaves and goes to the NBA and sits in a suit,” Gates said. “I have a better chance of coming back, playing another year in college…and getting better and learning more before I make that jump. I’ll be older and more mature.

“I want the chance to be able to go in there and play and have an impact, to have a chance to be a good player in the NBA as a rookie.”

The Bearcats took a huge step last year when they made their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2005 and advanced to the second round. But Gates says the job isn’t finished yet.

“When I first committed at the end of my junior year, me and Coach Cronin talked a lot about rebuilding the program and how we were both from here and how it would be big for us,” Gates said. “For me, just making it to the tournament one year and then leaving wouldn’t be holding up my end of the deal that I had with Coach Cronin.”

Many assumed when Gates signed with UC that he would play for the Bearcats for only two or three years and then move on to the NBA. But it hasn’t happened that way. Gates has gotten better each year and still believes he needs to improve more to become a viable NBA player.

“He’s never been in a hurry to leave school,” Cronin said. “He’s always had his own plan for the way things are going to go. Things are going to work out for him. He’s going to get his degree and he helped rebuild his hometown team that he grew up rooting for.”

I know Yancy has taken a lot of crap for his seemingly loafing attitude in game. But reading this, it sounds like the kid has a pretty good head on his shoulders when it comes to looking at things realistically. He knows he's not ready for the NBA yet, and maybe he's finally poised to live up to his hype.

I know this is a little OT for this thread, but this is another example of Koch regurgitating blog posts and making them articles.

At least you know it was written by Koch, seeing how the article lists Cuonzo Martin still at Missouri State

RE: Gates invited to world games tryouts
Great experience for Gates...would be awesome for him to make this 12 member USA team. Here is to hoping he has a monster senior season averaging a double double!

After watching some of the NBA playoffs, I saw a player who reminded me of Gates when he is locked in (exhibit A, exhibit B).

I do like comparisons, and I think Gates could become a player like Zach Randolph (hopefully minus the previous headcase issues). In 1 season at Michigan State, Zach Randolph scored 10.8 points with 6.7 rebounds helping to lead a MSU team to the final four, then at 19 he jumped to the pros and sat on the bench most of his first 2 years (after being picked in the middle of the 1st round). Year 3 in the NBA (what would have been his senior year in college had he stayed), Randolph jumped to 20 Pts and 10 Rebs a game winning most improved NBA player.

Both Gates and Randolph are 6-9 265 and at times BOTH look absolutely dominant...Gates freshman year he averaged 10.6 and 6.1 rebounds a game in less minutes a game than Randolph played as a freshman.
