LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville football team will lose three scholarships for the class of 2011 after failing to meet the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate standard.
The Cardinals' four-year APR score of 908 from 2006-10 fell below the minimum of 925. The APR measures the classroom performance of every Division I student-athlete, composing a score for each team.
The scholarship total has been reduced from 25 to 22, but second-year coach Charlie Strong only signed 21 players in the upcoming class in anticipation of the cut.
In a release Friday, the school says it has taken measures to increase productivity in the classroom, including adding academic support staff. Coaches also will receive progress reports more frequently.
"Continuity and stability among our coaching staffs lends itself to better performance, and unfortunately our football student-athletes endured three football coaches in four years," athletics director Tom Jurich said.
The Cardinals had three head coaches in the tracked period — Bobby Petrino in 2006, Steve Kragthorpe from 2007-09 and Strong in 2010.
"We want to improve our figures rapidly, and I'm impressed with the measures Charlie Strong has implemented in our football program," Jurich said. "I'm confident that we are our currently headed in the right direction."
The Cardinals finished 7-6 (3-4) in Strong's first year, including a 31-28 win over Southern Mississippi in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl on Dec. 21. Louisville's 2011 season opener is Sept. 1 against Murray State.
