Ted Kaczynski killed three people in a string of bombings between 1978 and 1995.
(RNN) - Ted Kaczynski, also known as the "Unabomber," may be a suspect in the 1982 Tylenol poisoning case that shocked consumers and left seven dead.
According to Bloomberg and CNN, Kaczynski said in a court filing that the FBI wants his DNA to determine if he is responsible for lacing the Tylenol with potassium cyanide.
The FBI has confirmed that Kaczynski is one of several individuals from whom they have requested DNA samples in the case.
"As part of the re-examination of the 1982 Tylenol poisonings, the FBI attempted to secure DNA from numerous individuals, including Ted Kaczynski," Cynthia Yates, spokeswoman for the FBI, told CNN. "To date, Kaczynski has declined to voluntarily provide samples."
The company issued a massive recall of the popular pain reliever after several people were sickened and hospitalized.
Tylenol's handling of the emergency became a text-book case for how businesses should handle a crisis. The company was widely praised for its transparency and speedy action.
The poisonings led to changes in the way medication is packaged, leading to tamper-proof containers.
The case was never solved.
Kaczynski is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Florence, CO, for killing three people with mail bombs.
According to CNN, the FBI has not indicated whether it has received Kaczynski's DNA. He insisted in his court filing, designed to put a halt to an auction of his things, that he is innocent.
"I have never even possessed any potassium cyanide," Kaczynski said.
