GSU Fall Enrollment Tops 32,000

http://www.gsu.edu/news/53438.html

Quote:ATLANTA-A record number of students will start classes at Georgia State University this fall. Fall enrollment numbers released today (Aug. 18) by Georgia State University officials show enrollment has topped 32,000 students for the first time ever.

"The extraordinary demand for admission to Georgia State is a testimony to the success of our various academic and student initiatives," said Timothy Renick, associate provost for academic programs.

After receiving 31,000 total applications for its fall semester, GSU has accepted 2,800 freshmen, which is among the largest first-year classes in the university's history.

GSU's freshman class has an average high school GPA of 3.39 (out of 4.0) and an average SAT score of 1,100 (out of 1,600), which is up seven points from last year.

"Both are records. In fact, over the past three years, average SAT scores for Georgia State freshmen have increased by 29 points," Renick said.

More than 200 freshmen have been admitted into the new GSU Honors College, which will provide students access to individualized advisement, small classes and seminars and priority registration. Those students have an average high school GPA of 3.8 and an average SAT score of almost 1,300.

Georgia State Football: Former Panthers Now “Necessary” on Small Screen

http://www.newstalk1160.com/georgia-stat...all-screen

Quote:As the Georgia State football team continues preparations for its encore season, a couple of seniors from the Panthers’ inaugural team can now be seen on television.

Viewers might have to look carefully to see them, but Iain Vance, last year’s All-America placekicker, and backup linebacker Trey Ennis earned roles as extras in the cable television series, “Necessary Roughness,” which airs on USA Network.

Vance graduated in the spring with a degree in political science and is now beginning graduate school in GSU’s sports administration program while working with the football team as a graduate assistant. Ennis, who also graduated in political science, is now in law school at Mercer University.

“Necessary Roughness” is about a psychologist who begins working for the local football team to counsel its star wide receiver. Much of the filming was done in Atlanta, both in studio and on location.

Quote:Vance does have one memorable moment.

“I have one actual scene where I’m on screen, by myself, for about three seconds. The scene was about pregame rituals, and it showed a couple of players going through their rituals. I play the kicker, and I’m pouring cayenne pepper into my shoe. That’s my pregame ritual.”

All in good time my friend. You already have a good stage in the CAA. Start winning that on a regular basis and the calls will come. You will be a good fit for C-USA one day. From up in NJ, Appy looks like a SunBelt. Charlotte will be in the MAC 5 years after fielding a team, to join the other A-10 playing FBS football schools.

Not starting football back in 1990's when everyone else did was one of the biggest mistakes ever. But I am smiling...10 Days until 9/2 The Encore.

Researchers uncover anti-cancer properties of whole ginger extract

http://www.gsu.edu/news/53580.html

Quote:ATLANTA - Scientists at Georgia State University have found that whole ginger extract has promising cancer-preventing activity in prostate cancer. The first of its kind study looks at the anti-cancer properties of ginger as a whole, rather than that of individual compounds found in the plant.

The lab of Ritu Aneja, associate professor of biology, found that the ginger extract had significant effects in stopping the growth of cancer cells, as well as in inducing cell death in a spectrum of prostate cancer cells. The research appears online in the British Journal of Nutrition.

Most importantly, in animal studies, the extract did not show significant toxicity to normal tissues, such as bone marrow.

"We found very good tumor regression by up to 60 percent, and no toxicity whatsoever," Aneja said. While much research has been performed on ginger's anti-cancer properties, Aneja's lab takes a more holistic approach when it comes to investigating the types of molecules involved.
