Big 12 could add Gator, Sun bowls to lineup
09:51 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 12, 2005
By KEITH WHITMIRE / The Dallas Morning News
The Big 12 is close to adding another New Year's Day bowl and another Texas bowl, all with the same selection.
The league is working on an agreement that would send a Big 12 team to the Jan. 1 Toyota Gator Bowl in two of the next four seasons. In the years a Big 12 team isn't in the Gator Bowl, the league would send a team to the Vitalis Sun Bowl in El Paso.
The Big 12 would alternate appearances in the bowls with the Big East, which includes Notre Dame in its selection pool, beginning with the 2006 regular season.
The Gator Bowl, in Jacksonville, Fla, has a $1.6 million payout. The Sun Bowl, played on Dec. 31, distributed $1.55 million per team last season.
"Hopefully we're going to get it accomplished in the next day or two," Sun Bowl football game chairman John Folmer said.
Big 12 spokesman Bob Burda said the league has a "high level of interest" in the Gator Bowl and would like the Sun Bowl to be part of the mix. He said the Big 12 hopes to have its new bowl lineup ratified by league presidents by the end of the week.
The Gator-Sun rotation would probably involve the Big 12's No. 4 or 5 team, Folmer said. The MasterCard Alamo Bowl, currently the Big 12's No. 4 bowl, pays $1.55 million.
The Gator Bowl is anchored by the ACC's No. 2 selection. The Sun Bowl would anchor with its No. 3 Pac-10 selection and drop its No. 5 Big Ten selection.

that's good news....So could the BE and the Big 12 be trading the Champs bowl for the Insight.com bowl? Or does the Big 10 pick up the Champs?

Ole Top Coog just crapped in his pants. Remember when we tried to tell him the Big East had an allie in Kevin Weiberg and the Big XII Conference.
So our bowl lineup could look like this:
1. BCS-(Orange, Sugar, Rose, Cotton or BCS Title Game) 17 Million.
2. Gator/Sun Bowl-(Payout up to 2 Million in Both)
3. Champ Sports
4. Tire Bowl
5. Motor City when Big 10 can't fill obligation.

I hope so. We would be in great shape if we traded the Insight.com Bowl for the Champs Bowl. It's a perfect bowl trade for the Big 12 and Big East! On an ironic note, the C-USA board was talking about how there was no chance for the Big East to get the Sun Bowl. People have to remember, this is about money and exposure and the Big East's media markets give the Sun Bowl some serious exposure.

And how about the MWC? They were all over the Big East and talking about taking the Insight.com bowl from us. Now we might just trade it for a more equitable, and higher paying bowl!

After reading some morning articles it appears that ND can only go to each bowl one out of 4 yrs and the gator bowl has first choice over the sun bowl.....It seems vital to me that we pick up one more quality second tier bowl for the yrs Notre Dame is taking our spot in the Sun/gator....There has to be a replacement for the Insight bowl in case the Champs bowl picks up the Big 10 slot that had gone to the Sun bowl before
-- Perhaps the Independence bowl would make some sense

Jackson, This is not a slam on the Big East, but how many Big East fans will travel all the way to El Paso? It might be a more prestigeous bowl, but it would be embarassing if it's only attended by 5,000 Big East fans. I think Florida bowls would attract more Big East fans, than a bowl on the Mexican border.

Notre Dame, Louisville, WVU and I have a feeling UConn fans would make the trip.

-- After reading an article about how badly the Sun wanted ND this morning...I think I can safely say there will only be one BE team going to El Paso during the 4 yr contract....remember that untill yesterday the BE was tied with the Insight.com bowl in Phoenix...even West Virginia and VT (the two anchors of the OBE when it came to bowls) only took tiny crowds out there...I guess the Sun bowl will take one down yr in attendance in exchange for a pair of Texas schools and ND the other three yrs
-- My guess is the Sun bowl was one of the major reasons the Big12 and ND were having discussions about the Irish leaving the BE bowl package....this is a bowl the BE would have no shot at without ND

I agree that the Sun Bowl only wants the Big 12 & Notre Dame. Syracuse better hope that their not the Big East school that has to make the trip.

The dates are also important just as the location of the bowls. Cusa has very bad dates for their bowls hence the lack of attendance to pre-Christmas weeknight bowls etc. I favor Fla over Texas for bowls for our area of fans but the Sun-Gator deal seems
ok to me.

I don't think the Sun pays $2 million.

I've read $1.35 Million. Either way, that's quite a jump. Gator was $1.6 Million where I read.

The MAC wants to move its MCB tie in with the Big Ten from a #7 pick to the #5. That is what the thought is with the Big Ten out of the Sun Bowl.
Don't forget the Toronto Bowl in 2006 (MAC vs. Big East)
