Watched the game on DVR last night
Was very impressed with Nick Temple. Kid was making tackles and hitting people all over the field.

Collaros should only be allowed one shovel pass every 3 games. After that he gets his card revoked. He threw at least 3 or maybe 4 of them... and I saw him think about throwing another one. And that 20 yard shovel pass... Probably the most ridiculous play I have ever seen a QB make.

Our TE's are money. Kelce and ARob. Need to get the ball to them as much as possible, particularly in the red zone. They are big fast kids that have pretty good hands and can get open.

Our receivers played great after the first quarter. Felt like they had been dropping the ball a lot, but they redeemed themselves. They took a lot of licks and hung onto the ball, particularly later in the game.

USF was helped out tremendously by those phantom PI calls. Of course, they evened it out with their 5 PF's.

Was a little disappointed with our tackling at the point of attack. There were several times when guys were met at or behind the line, and the backs skipped forward for 3-5 yards. Had previously been doing a good job of that, and that needs to tighten up (teams like Cuse and Pitt are going to try and pound us). Of course that 240 lb. running back for USF was a beast.

Thought USF's d-line had the best game of any unit on the field. Those guys were constantly in the backfield. Couldn't go laterally on them, either. However, their secondary was also filling quickly and they had an extra dback out there, so maybe that helped to.

What the h3ll was Hoffman's problem? Something like 3 false starts? Very unusual. He had one that absolutely killed us late in the game when were trying to melt the clock. Can't have dumb penalties in winning time.

Didn't think Pead danced around too much as was the general feeling on the board. I really just don't think he had any holes at all. Guys were in his face immediately. This concerns me, as Miami was all over Pead as well.

Liked Wes Richardson's hitting, but at the same time- How bout a little less shock n' awe and a little more technique, son? Ditto for Drew Fry.

Hope Domnique Battle's injury is not serious. Got a bye week to get healthy. Would really like to see him and Drane out their as our top 2 cb's.

Good summary. Our offensive line was OK, but not great. They did do a very good job on the winning TD drive at the end, but overall there were very few running holes and the pass protection was only average. But the defensive backs were again our weak spot. Guys consistently no where near the USF receivers. On one USF 3rd and 2, our corners were 8 yards off the line of scrimmage and our safeties 12-14 yards off the line of scrimmage.

I still think quite a bit of that is the scheme. Maybe I'm wrong, but you don't line up 8 yards off the line of scrimmage unless your coach tells you to. I know Narduzzi used to like to call a lot of tight man coverage and blitz the h3ll out of the other team. But that's when we had guys like Mickens and D. Smith.

Of course, the other side of the coin is Jancek and Banks know the personnel and figure we have a worse chance on getting beat deep, and that's what they are trying to prevent.

Anyway you look at it, the secondary is improved from last year. They went from horrible to just bad. And you have to believe we get even better in the future with some of the young talent coming in.

RE: Watched the game on DVR last night
There is literally nothing that the offensive line can do in spread formations when the defense commits 7 people to stop the run as USF did, and Miami before them. Everyone knows that iPead is what bridges the gap between good and and great for the offense. and defensive coordinators set out to take him away by committing extra defenders to stop the run. That leaves gaps in the secondary to be exploited, which Collaros did.

Watched some of the replay. During Kenbrell's catch on the last drive, where McClung laid the hammer, Zach hung in the pocket really, really patiently and made a perfect throw right as he was about to get sacked. It was a tough, clutch play.

From what I gather, the offensive line is pretty banged up physically, so I think they should be cut some slack. Hooey still couldn't go and Hoffman (Butch said he was playing on one leg) and Bujnoch are hurting. Hopefully the bye week will help them get a little healthier for the stretch run.

I do remember Bujnoch holding his arm or shoulder (as if it was about to fall off) at one point late in the game. Not even sure if he came off the field or stayed in there.

Overall, I'd say the o-line has been very impressive this year given the big question mark they were heading into the season.

Hoffman's bad leg may have led to the false starts. Even when he wasn't called for a false start he was coming up as the ball was being snapped like he was trying to time it perfectly to come up as early as possible. May have been him trying to compensate for the bad leg.

FWIW, Zach was adamant after the game that the 20 yard shovel interception was intended to go out of bounds. I'm not sure how it ended up in play among a throng of USF defenders but I'll give Zach the benefit of the doubt.

yeah...I read his quote on that. I believe him....but man, he's going to have to do a better job next time of making sure that thing floats out of bounds...good grief.

RE: Watched the game on DVR last night
Good breakdown!

I agree on Pead. I didn't think he danced too much at all. With USF's speed he had to do what he did to try and make a play. His fumble was just a good play by the USF linebacker. Again I didn't come away thinking he danced too much. Against most defenses he turns a few of those runs into huge plays.

USF was by far the fastest and most athletic defense UC will see all season and it's not close.

For a while Saturday it felt like last year all over again. Red zone execution was poor early on. The offensive line was getting manhandled as well as picking up a lot of penalties, etc... Fortunately the Oline did play better as the game went along and the red zone execution really improved throughout the game.

This team unfortunately is still really bad in the secondary. There really isn't anything else you can say. Against the two good passing teams this year they have faced they've been lit up. Drane is the best DB overall IMO. The safeties just aren't good enough. Richardson is way too slow to be effective in pass coverage. They were picking on him all game long as he was just too late in almost every situation to get over there and help out the corners or linebackers. A few times it was obvious the coverage was for the corner to release the WR after he got downfield a certain amount of yards and every single time it was on Richardson's side it was a completed pass.

It was a D- effort at best from the secondary on Saturday because the front 7 played really well and was getting consistent pressure on Daniels. He was getting hit within 2 seconds on a number of pass plays and still finding WR's open by 5-10 yards.

I can't say enough how impressed I am with true freshman Nick Temple and Alex Chisum. Those guys are going to be stars!!! Temple moves really well for a linebacker and Chisum is just smooth all the way around. He also has better speed than I expected. He can outrun some people with the ball in his hands.

When I saw it I thought that was what he was trying to do. I still think it was one of the worst decisions I have ever seen a QB make.
