Saw this in the paper this morning, I was wondering if you all think this is a good idea for USF to take a chance on schaeffer, he was a good student in high school and didn't get into any serious trouble, maybe a change of scenery will do him good. do you think this will help or hurt the big east's image. how good do you think he is?

<a href='http://www.stpetetimes.com/2005/05/04/Sports/Vols_transfer_has_USF.shtml' target='_blank'>Brent Schaeffer </a>

Even with four quarterbacks on scholarship this fall, look for South Florida to make an aggressive push to land Brent Schaeffer, the Deerfield Beach prep standout who is leaving Tennessee after his freshman season.

Schaeffer, who strongly considered USF out of high school, seems to have the Bulls high on his list as well.

"I talked with him (Tuesday) night, and South Florida was the only school he mentioned by name," said Joe Redmond, who was Schaeffer's high school coach. "He's mentioned them a lot. I've talked to USF as well, and they're not able to do anything in terms of talking to him until they get (a release), but I know they're champing at the bit to talk to him."

Redmond said he has talked with USF coach Jim Leavitt and quarterbacks coach Rod Smith since Tennessee announced he was leaving. USF has not yet received a release from the Vols, but Schaeffer's mother, Chandra, said Tuesday her son was working on getting the necessary paperwork so he can begin speaking with other schools.

He is a hellva talent and maybe a change will do him some good.

As long as he stay on the straight and narrow USF QB problems are over.

thanks for the responses so far, one problem is if he does sign with usf one of our new qb recruits might transfer, possibly carlton hill who was a 4 star qb recruit like schaeffer, whom i was hoping could become a michael bush type player for us. other than that i think schaeffer's name alone should bring in a lot of fans into the program especially in florida which is sec country, he'll definitetly be exciting to watch. how would he stack up against brohm, palko, etc.

Since he left Tenn. somewhat involuntarily, does he get to play his first year, or would he have sit out the first year?

Rumor has it that he saw the proverbial writing on the wall and realized that he was not the QB of the future for Tennessee and did what he thought he had to do to get his release...skipping classes. Unless the NCAA grants him special permission (not gonna happen), he still has to sit a year before he can play. THe only way a player typically gets to leave and play immediately is when there was some sort of scandal that caused them to leave (Albert Mean @ Alabama or Loren Roberts/John Lucas Jr. @ Baylor).

It was also rumored that he was interested in Memphis, but his release was granted with the understnading that he would not transfer to any school that would appear on the Volunqueers schedule.

He's got talent, and I think he's not as much of a headcase as he's been made out to be.

Is there validity to this? That article just stated that his release has not been granted yet. Generally, there's some sort of in-conference transfer rule, but considering if the "12-game season" issue passes, schedules are really yet complete yet.

Rumors have alot of schools tied to this kid. USF prolly does have the inside track based on his coach's comments though.

most likely he's going to have to sit out this year and have three years of elgibility left. nothing's official yet but i would expect fulmer to place some restrictions (i.e. can't transfer within conference, etc) reading some comments on the tennessee rivals board he was apparently having the best spring of the three qb's. but ainge suits their offense better, he's obviously more of a prototypical pro style qb and schaeffer was being worked as a punt/kick returner which he wasn't too happy about.

it's not a done deal supposedly oklahoma and pittsburgh were also inquiring about him, but the fact that we are close to home, recruited him heavily, and the fact that he ran the spread in high school probably gives us the upper hand. having him in the big east along with gwaltney, brohm, and palko can give us some much needed star power.

Texan,

I see you've noticed USF's penchant for a long police blotter. May I ask if you have a negative or neutral opinion on football programs that have an extremely high number of team arrests. I think Tenn, UGA, and USC had something like 13 arrests this year which took them to the lead for the SEC. However, USF went over twenty something arrests and only managed a 4-7 season in CUSA. Does this sit well with you or has no meaning?
No school is perfect however, I hope USF improves in the quality of player they bring in over the next 5 years. I save my harshest criticisms for the Bobby Bowden's, etc......

Take a look in the mirror. Then, after you get done looking in the mirror, feel free to win a game.

Gee, fibbed resume versus a guy who was jailed for beating his pregnant girlfriend, or how about a guy who assaulted a cop, or how about the guys who robbed their own teammate's dorm room, or how about the group that got busted burglarizing other students and had his two year old daughter in the car. Gee I can see where you get off with the comparisons. Oh and trust me we'll be smack talking when we beat USF this year.
Exhibit B: UCF fans' boner for USF.

Oh btw....I guess if you overlook O'Leary trying to get one of his players killed and getting busted for giving his players money he is shining moral example.

Oh....one more thing, at least one of our athletes is not a FBI fugitive.
