Little complaining among this year's NCAA 'bubble' teams that didn't make it

By DAVID GINSBURG, AP Sports Writer
March 13, 2005
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Gary Williams and his Maryland basketball team still watched the television intently -- but with the way they played down the stretch, the Terrapins had little hope of being invited to the NCAA tournament.

And they knew it.

``We had the opportunity to get in and we didn't take advantage of it,'' Williams said.

Maryland (16-12), Saint Joseph's (19-11), DePaul (19-10), and Notre Dame (17-11) were among the teams considered on the bubble as the tournament selection committee met Sunday.

But no one seemed to be doing much grumbling when their name wasn't called.

Unlike last year, when Utah State's sparkling 25-3 record and a brutal schedule weathered by Missouri (16-13) left each scratching their heads in the NIT, there was no clear-cut loser to the whims of the selection committee.

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said his team's loss to Rutgers in the first round of the Big East Conference tournament last Wednesday was a clear sign that an NCAA bid was probably out of reach.

``I think I was mentally prepared to play in the NIT after the disappointing loss to Rutgers,'' Brey said. ``Certainly some things happened over the week that tweak your interest, but I think I had our guys prepared and I was prepared to accept an NIT bid.''

Phil Martelli, whose Hawks of St. Joe's were 3-8 in nonconference play, also saw the writing on the wall.

``When you're on the razor, you have to give a reason to put you in and a reason to keep you out,'' Martelli said. ``The number that jumped out was 3-8.''

DePaul senior guard Drake Diener said he, too, tried not to get his hopes up.

``I was not expecting to be there after some of the things that happened the last few days,'' Diener said. ``I had a bad feeling today because a lot of the talk didn't have us involved.''

Maryland had its run of 11 straight NCAA tournament appearances come to an end after a feeble finish in which the Terrapins lost five of their last six games, including the final four.

Maryland went 2-0 against Atlantic Coast Conference champion Duke and also beat ACC tournament finalist Georgia Tech.

``That's nice, but you look at our losses in the league and the ACC tournament, and that kind of balances that out,'' Williams said.

If Maryland had won any one of its last four games against Clemson (twice), North Carolina and Virginia Tech, it likely would have extended its streak of successive NCAA appearances to a dozen.

But the Terrapins came up short, and now they're out of the NCAA and in the NIT.

``It's a bad break, but we've still got to play,'' center Ekene Ibekwe said. ``We're mad that we didn't make it, but we'll just go from here.''
