The University of Memphis and the Memphis Grizzlies have had seven head-to-head games on TV this year. The Tigers had better ratings for 5 of the 7 games. There's been a lot of talk on this message board about schools "carrying" certain TV markets. I think this proves that The Univeristy of Memphis "carries" Memphis.

I doubt that Temple can top the 76ers, Georgetown can top the Wizards, Rice can top the Rockets, DePaul can top the Bulls, Marquette can top the Bucks, etc.

Yeah, but what are the ratings for the games that don't go up against the Grizzlies? They definitely take a hit when that game is on TV, I'm sure.

When both games are on TV at the same time, you split the audience. Therefore both teams get lower ratings...

Our ratings are definitely higher when we are the only team playing. The point I was making, however, is that our college team can get better ratings than an NBA team in the same market. I think that proves that The University of Memphis "brings" the Memphis market, which is an NBA size market. I think that is pretty impressive.

And it's not like Griz don't draw or get OK TV ratings. I think they are drawing 16,000 per game.

My point is that the big networks aren't going to want competition for viewers in that market. The more competition, the lower the ratings, the less money they get for advertising spots. I'm glad to see that UM brings in more viewers on average than the Grizzlies, but those head to head games kill ratings for both teams.

If you want to look at it in a negative light... a NBA team that has only been in Memphis for 3 years (I believe that is correct, let me know if I'm wrong) is already getting better ratings than the team that has played in the city forever around 30% of the time...

That being said, I still want Memphis in the Big East.

There aren't many head to head games.

Regarding the Griz getting better ratings than the Tigers 30% of the time, they should because they are an NBA team.

I guarantee you that Memphis is the only college in the country in the same market with an NBA team that can get better ratings. That includes Georgtown, St. John's, Miami, Tulane, DePaul, Marquette, UCLA, SMU, TCU, Houston, Rice, California, UNC-Charlotte, Georgia Tech and many others.

Thanks for the stats 3601....the only trouble is the BE football school's basketball markets aren't going to be the issue...I would guess that the conference higher ups would be more interested in the ratings the Tigers get in Memphis/west Tennessee for college football and compares those to UTs, Ole Miss's and Arkansas in the same area etc....our concern for football markets is more profound

I know this...during this past bowl season, the Tigers game in the GMAC Bowl had the second highest ratings of any bowl in the local market...only the BCS championship game drew higher ratings. I want to say the rating was around a 9.8.

Part of that could be due to the fact that UM was playing in the first bowl game of the year... you need to find out what your average rating was when on ESPN last year.

The Grizzleis are a young expansion team also still trying to grow a fan base; do they have 10 years yet? Yes Memphis State rules the city but place any of these college teams in the same situation and I'm sure you would see the same result.

Nobody wants to give Memphis any credit. The fact is that The University of Memphis "brings" a major league TV market better than most urban universities in the country. For football and basketball. The Grizzlies have fine ratings. The Tigers just happen to have better ratings.

-- No one is saying you don't bring ratings for hoops....but I would be more curious to see what kind of TV ratings the Tigers get when Ole Miss, Ut and Memphis all have noon kickoffs on a saturday afternoon....those stats will be more telling of UMs true TV market when it comes to football

Memphis was playing in the 3rd bowl game of the year (Tangerine and New Orleans were before them). Memphis will possibly be televising their home games this year on the local ABC affiliate which means that there is a demand for the Tigers.

To be honest, I can't think of one time where all 3 were on TV at the same time in this market. 3601, did any of the other games overlap our game with UAB that was on TV?

Just out of curiosity has Memphis' attendance taken any hits since the Grizzlies moved in? I realize the numbers might be a bit skewed as you are having a down year, but still, any change?

season tickets were down about 1500 to just around 12,500. but most of that decrease is a result of the move to the forum. folks like myself were faced with moving from the lower bowl at the pyramid to the third level at the forum and many said no thanks. average attendance is a bit down, but to be honest, this years team has been hard to like. donation levels are at an all time high.

the university of memphis still delivers the memphis market.

Yes. Nobody will argue that the Griz haven't hurt basketball attendance some, but football attendance is at an all-time high. Despite the Griz, we still have very good attendance. Just not as good as before.
