That's right. Look, I don't care much for Swofford either because of the nature of the long-term deal with ESPN. But consider what Matt said a split deal at the time with Fox and ESPN was not an option.

Why wasn't it an option? The SEC had a split deal. The Big 12 had a split deal. Not sure about other conferences.

I was under the impression that cat_daddy was referring to ESPN and FOX splitting broadcast and cable rights for all sports, like the Pac-12 where FOX and ABC will have football games on their broadcast networks and F/X and ESPN (FSN for MBK too) will have content. That I don't believe was an option. I believe the way the presentations went it was all-or-nothing for those two parties, with Raycom's pitch being only for their regional rights in football and full rights in men's baskeball. No other conference splits its rights in this fashion. at least yet, though there are rumblings about the Big 12's deals with ESPN and FOX being amended so that FOX broadcast network can show some Big 12 football.

The two conferences you mention have two different broadcasters, but they have very clear lines. CBS has the broadcast network deal for football & basketball, ESPN has the cable deal. ABC can't show an SEC home game. Big 12 was same, except ABC was the over-the-air partner for football, sole rightsholder for men's basketball, while FSN had the cable rights for football and primary rights for all other sports. In the case of the Big 12, a loophole was allowed for FOX's package to license games to another cable station, which is why Big 12 games have appeared on TBS, Versus and ESPN in previous years.

When ESPN and FOX elected to work together on the Pac-12, it was more out of prodding by those negotiating for the Pac-12. Comcast had the winning bid until they decided to work together.

RE: Question re timing of ESPN ACC, SEC, Big 12 negotiations
whatever happens, I hope that

(1) the money is within $1 or $2 million of the top conferences (I don't mind being 5th if it's close enough),
(2) ACC football can get on regional over-the-air broadcasts as often as possible,
(3) ACC football can get on national TV (ABC and/or ESPN/cable) as often as possible and
(4) ACC football can get in prime time - especially Saturday night - several times per year.

Of course it would nice to have the richest media rights contract, but I think exposure along the East and South is more important as long as the money is comparable.

The relationship is a carryover from the old C.D. Chesley days.
C.D. Chesley was a Carolina grad that pioneered college sports broadcasting with re-plays of Notre Dame football games on Sundays. Chesley put together a network of stations to broadcast Carolina's 1957 NCAA championship. He went on to "make" ACC basketball with the nations first and still best conference basketball network.

Fine. Let them keep the hoops.

Doesn't change the fact that the Raycom TV package is pretty much like UNC football, small-time worthless garbage.

The only thing bad about living in South Carolina is the fact that it's so windy because NC sucks so bad.

I know that folks in SC are called geechees, but up north we call anyone who talks funny from the south geechees. I've known plenty of geechees in that since, here in upstate NY. Its funny seeing someone from NC calling someone from SC geechee.

BTW, whats the correct spelling? Or is there a correct spelling?

You didnt spend a lot of time in the city. Its a term that African Americans use. In fact, I have never heard anyone but african americans use the term. I first heard the term in seventh grade at Frederick Douglas Jr High. I'm african american btw. I would bet that the poster who used the term is also african american, although I could be wrong. lol.

Interesting, I though the term would have been more widely known up north. I have heard folks in Florida use the term as well.

RE: Question re timing of ESPN ACC, SEC, Big 12 negotiations
With all of these TV contracts coming up and being renegotiated, can someone explain to me how the Big 12 is going to get $19 - $20 million per school per year (rumored) with only 10 teams and having lost four of their TV draws and two of the their most populous states (Missouri, Colorado) and still have their Tier 3 rights?

I mean, wouldn't you think that the ACC would get at least this much - even if it has to goto artibitration?

I'm sure it's already been discussed on this site many times but am I missing something?

Gullah

Quote:The Gullah are African Americans who live in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina and Georgia, which includes both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands.

Historically, the Gullah region extended from the Cape Fear area on the coast of North Carolina south to the vicinity of Jacksonville on the coast of Florida; but today the Gullah area is confined to the South Carolina and Georgia Lowcountry. The Gullah people and their language are also called Geechee, which some scholars speculate is related to the Ogeechee River near Savannah, Georgia. The term "Geechee" is an emic term used by speakers (and can have a derogatory connotation depending on usage).

Honestly I consider it an honor that the idiots in Yankee Carolina refer to us South Carolinians as "Geechies", as the Gullah are a proud people who have added a lot to the culture of SC and the US. Just goes to show you that they can't even insult people right.

You don't get this kind of education on other sports boards! In fact... I think I sense a need for a new thread here!

I'm not saying the Big 12 won't get $19-$20 million, but... look at who it is that's starting these rumors first. Is it a W Virginia fan? They want it sooooooo bad!

Honestly, when all is said & done I expect all 5 major conferences to get nearly the same money from TV... but again, that's just my opinion, and may have no more value than that of a WVU fan (or, maybe it does?).
