This is an extremely interesting article about the position the Pirates are in with Pedro Alvarez. The question essentially boils down to whether or not he'll hit but it really runs deeper when you look at how much the team has riding on him.

Interesting stuff. I don't remember Eldridge and didn't know the Pirates had a shot at Howard. Another player the Pirates totally nuked was Aramas Ramerez. SMH

Ramirez was even worse because it was a salary dump in its purest form.

The article does make it pretty clear though that it wasn't a completely idiotic move to not accept the trade for Howard. That sounds like a shocker. Of course hindsight is 20/20.
