Updated Baseball Standings - May 18th
Louisville came from down 5-2 tonight to win 6-5 over Pitt in 12 innings and tie for the conference lead. That was made possible by Seton Hall taking down St John's. USF missed a chance to make it a three way tie by falling at WVU.

All 3 teams with a chance at the 8 seed lost so Villanova hangs on to the final spot in the conference tournament for the moment.

Weekend Series
UofL 1-0 vs Pittsburgh
Seton Hall 1-0 vs St John's
WVU 1-0 vs USF
UConn 1-0 vs Notre Dame
Rutgers 1-0 vs Villanova
Cincy 1-0 vs Georgetown

Updated standings through 5/17:

UofL 17-8 (37-17) [#40]
St. John's 17-8 (32-20) [#58]
Seton Hall 16-9 (32-21) [#91]
USF 16-9 (33-19) [#65]
UConn 15-10 (28-24) [#87]
Rutgers 14-11 (29-23) [#97]
Notre Dame 13-12 (28-24) [#100]
Villanova 10-15 (28-25)
-----------------------------

I posted pretty much the same thing in the other baseball thread. You know tiebreakers better than me, is WVU still alive for the 8 seed? It sure seems like they could end up at least tied for 8th.

Sorry, I hadn't seen the other thread. WVU is still officially alive for the 8 seed. It was probably less than a 1% chance entering the weekend so I hadn't seriously considered them. WVU owns the tiebreaker over Pitt & Nova, so to make the tournament they need:

-To finish 2-0 vs USF
-Nova to finish 0-2 vs Rutgers
-Georgetown to finish 0-2 vs Cincy
-Pitt has to lose at least 1 of 2 vs UofL

I'm not sure what the tiebreaker is for teams who did not play in the regular season. That situation could be at issue since USF and SH missed each other this year. If they consider performance against teams at the top of the standings (like Big East basketball) that favors SH since they are the only team to win a series against UofL.

The better question is will they finally put some money and effort into baseball now that they are in Big 12. Their coach has like 1 NCAA tournament appearance in like 18 years and keeping a guy around like that is not what I would call a school thats commited to its baseball program.

St John's beat Seton Hall 5-4 in 12 innings this afternoon. That gives them a half game lead over UofL at the moment and guarantees them at least the 2 seed in the tournament. Rutgers also beat Nova today, giving Pitt and Georgetown a chance to tie for the 8th spot this evening.

Pitt handed UofL their worst loss of the conference season tonight, 8-2. St John's controls their destiny tomorrow for an untied regular season title. WVU currently has a 9-8 lead over USF in the 8th inning.

Cincy beats Georgetown for the 2nd day in a row, so it looks like the Hoyas may not make their first Big East tournament since 1986. Sad but true fact of the night, Cincinnati has the longest current winning streak in conference play at 3 games now!

Notre Dame beat UConn in a game that is purely for seeding.

RE: Updated Baseball Standings - May 17th
USF drops game 2 and the series to WVU. With the two losses USF's RPI took a nose dive. Only UofL and St John's have any chance now at an at-large bid. Everyone in the top 4 loses today except for St John's who is now in the driver's seat.

Weekend Series
Rutgers 2-0 vs Villanova
WVU 2-0 vs USF
Cincy 2-0 vs Georgetown
UofL 1-1 vs Pittsburgh
St John's 1-1 vs Seton Hall
UConn 1-1 vs Notre Dame

Updated standings through 5/18:

St. John's 18-8 (33-20) [#58]
UofL 17-9 (37-18) [#42]
Seton Hall 16-10 (32-22) [#97]
USF 16-10 (33-20) [#78]
UConn 15-11 (28-25) [#91]
Rutgers 15-11 (30-23) [#95]
Notre Dame 14-12 (29-24) [#94]
Villanova 10-16 (28-26) [#178]
-----------------------------
Pittsburgh 10-16 (28-25)
Georgetown 9-17 (23-29)
West Virginia 9-17 (23-31)
Cincinnati 7-19 (18-37)

-St John's has won at least a share of the title. If they and UofL tie, the Cards are the #1 seed.
-UConn has the tiebreaker over Rutgers if that comes into play
-4 teams are still alive for the final spot in the tournament. WVU needed an unbelievable number of games to all fall their way and after 2 days they are somehow still alive. Nova & Pitt didn't play so I'm not sure who has the tiebreaker if they end up tied for 8th. If we have a 3 way tie, I don't have a clue what the conference does.

USF beat WVU, which eliminates WVU. As of this writing, Seton Hall and St. Johns are tied 4-4 heading to the 9th. As far as I can tell, USF and Louisville will end up in the same half of the bracket no matter what happens in that game. If St. Johns wins, they win the regular season crown (and get the 1 seed), Louisville gets 2nd, USF 3rd, UConn 4th and Seton Hall 5th. If Seton Hall wins, Louisville is co-champs and gets the 1 seed, St. Johns falls to 2, Seton Hall and USF tie for 3rd, and if they go by better record against top seed, Seton Hall would get the 3 seed and USF the 4 seed.

RE: Updated Baseball Standings - May 18th
Just saw a tweet from the Big East Conference that Pittsburgh wins the 3-way tiebreaker over Villanova and Georgetown. I was kind of rooting for Georgetown to earn their first-ever trip to the Big East Baseball tournament. So Pittsburgh is the 8 seed and Notre Dame is the 7 seed. I think everything else depends on the Seton Hall/St. Johns game.

Had WVU won over USF, Georgetown would have advanced on a four team tie-breaker.

There's always next year....unless you're WVU, of course.
