in the past day or two, these are the coaches that have been mentioned as possible candidates on ohio state's theinsiders site. glad to see they are narrowing the field. (i am not making ANY of these up)
bobby knight
thad matta
herb sendek
gene stallings
willis wilson
tom crean
george karl
phil jackson
gary waters
skip prosser
gino from the uconn womens' team
pat summit
mike godfried
john gianni (maine)
bruce pearl
jim ferry (long island)
johnny dawkins
jim cleamons
al skinner (well, they just listed "boston college's coach," but i think that counts)
mike brey
fran dunphy (upenn)
mark few
i'm probably leaving some out. in fact i'm almost certain i am. if there was ever an example of how not to conduct a coaching search, tosu should write the text book.

Mulcahy, the AD of Rutgers, denied OSU permission to spead to Waters. I guess we can take him off the list.

Since when are "we" the ones searching for OSU's next HC? Just kidding. With the team probably going on probation, they still should be able to find a suitable replacement (i.e. Scott Drew). By the way, what do you guys think will become of OB? I wouldn't mind UC adding him as an Asst. Everyone deserves a second chance.
peace.

I really think OSU will hire Willis Wilson as their next HC. It will get the NCAA to back off them quite a bit and will probably lighten the punishment.

Why would hiring Rice's coach lessen their punishment?
peace.

From his bio on Riceowls.com:
Quote:As a member of the NABC Board of Directors, Wilson sits on the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee, and he recently was on the Academic Committee.
Plus I believe recently he was the Chairman of the BB Rules Committee. This guy is seen as being as clean and fair as humanly possible. I doubt the NCAA would come down too hard on a team that is going to be coached by one of the people that sit on the committee that makes and enforces the rules.

yes, but if i'm not mistaken people from the rules committee are not allowed to participate in matters involving their own institutions, even if they are the chairman. right?? i guess it could still have an effect though.
i'd hate to see willis wilson leave rice. out of all the people mentioned, he is the one that they (they being the fans) seem to like the least. they talk about how he has a lifetime losing record, which is stupid.
willis wilson has done a bang up job at rice. it's RICE for crissake. they were in the crapper three seasons ago and he has COMPLETELY turned them around. they have gone to two straight nits, have recruited well, and will likely be the favorites to win the wac next year. i think they will be in position to receive an at large bid. he is someone that i would hope xavier has their eyes on. to say that he would not make a good coach is ignorant on the part of ohio state fans. hell, as bad as rice is, they've still had better seasons than ohio state the past two years and will probably have a better season for the NEXT two years. with probation looming, they definitely have a much better shot at making the tournament than ohio state does.

i've got a great idea on how ohio state can select their next coach and get tons of publicity!!!!
we'll have a reality show set up just like dream job!!
we'll take all the candidates on this list as contestant and have a panel that consists of myself, oleski, thg (simply because they are the ones who have responded to this thread) and one other person. the american public can count as the fifth vote. each week, we will narrow the field until there is only one candidate left standing. the winner of the contest gets the job. judging by how long this list is, it should be wrapping up just in time for midnight madness........of 2005.
someone call espn!!

Glad to see Paul Hewitt isn't on that list, b/c he isn't going anywhere.

I have to admit I hope they don't take Xaviers coach.
I may dislike the Muskies at times, but overall I dislike the Bucks far more due to their even more obnoxious fans.

in today's enquierer, thad announced that he wasn't a candidate.
what a complete suck job by THE athletic department. it has been THREE WEEKS!!! it's JULY!! this is the beginning of an important time for recruiting, and THE is STILL without a coach and the field doesn't appear to be narrowed any.
these are programs that i feel did an excellent job in replacing their coaches. southern illinois, for two straight years, knew who they wanted when their coach left and went out and got them within days. illinois got their guy in less than a week when bill self went to kansas. kansas got bill self within days of roy williams leaving. pittsburgh knew who they wanted when howland bolted for ucla. when skip prosser turned it down, they went with their second choice (whose name i should remember but can't).
all of those programs did superb jobs in replacing their coaches and NONE of them missed a beat. nearly all the programs are just as good or better than they were before their coaches left. even though it only took a matter of days, by no means did they rush through it. it is because they are constantly prepared and knew who they wanted and that is how you have to be imho. every program needs to have a short list and be prepared at all times in case their coach leaves.
THE is going by way of saint john's. after mike jarvis was fired, their "search" consisted of naming candidates like rick pitino, billy donavon, phil martelli, bobby gonzalez, and several other big name coaches. of course, no one was interested and it took them six months to finally get whoever they have now. kinda reminds me of THE. COMPLETELY ill prepared for this and it has been managed extremely poorly. it is getting to the point to where no coach with any ethics would take the job. that would mean abandoning their old school at a very crucial time for recruiting. when indiana fired bobby knight over the summer, they did not even attempt a coaching search. they just named an interim head coach with plans of opening the search up once the season ended. afterwards they decided to stick with davis as their man. THE should do the same. just name an interim and try again next year. they are likely to have a bigger pool of interested candidates doing it that way.

you know, tosu's reluctance or failure to hire a new bball coach in a timely fashion further illustrates just how much attention the bball program gets at the school, which is pretty close to none when compared to the fball program. as much as the school and fans want to say and think the coaching vacancy is a very attractive and desirable job, the AD is sure not acting like it much cares for the program's well being right now. As xubrew pointed out, further dragging the situation makes it harder on recruitment as well as harder for many coaches from other programs to jump ship.
can you imagine what everyone will say if this was the football program instead of bball? I'd be willing to bet that a new coach would've been in place in a week. But then we're talking about football, so this problem wouldn't have existed in the first place, right?

Yipg - you may recall OSU had a similar time naming the replacement for the fired football coach Cooper. Tressel was only chosen after they threw around the names of Minnesota's, Pitt's, and Oklahoma's coaches. In football, OSU may be justified in saying they have one of the top spots available - and they didn't handle that search well. (althouh Tressel proved to be a good hire IMO). I don't think it's a fiasco because its BBall. It's a fiacso becasue the AD is lost
