I disagree strongly. While this might sound overly simplistic, it takes only 300 $1k donors to equal that $3M total.

How hard is it to find $1k donors??? Not too hard if we start winning with 30,000 in attendance. And these people are probably annual donors, not like the $3M group.

Unfortunately, sometimes I think ODAF acts like the $1,000-2,000 donors are not that important. But the fact is, they matter a lot. There are a helluva lot more folks who can donate at that level than those who can donate at higher levels.

I don't disagree, but it is simple economics. If the high rollers are willing to make up for 200 $1000 donors, no big deal.. Haven't even approached potential corporate sponsors that are currently on sidelines.

RE: ODAF Donations
This is an interesting topic.

I think I get a lot of love from the ODAF folks, and my donation is in that "median" range mentioned previously.

Do you folks go to the Coaches Caravan or attend BBQ's? Like in any sales situation, its all about connecting with people, and these are great opportunities to do so.

Seriously, I'd be happy to pass along the concerns (including the BBR beer issue) to ODAF, as they do care what our donors are thinking. I have a meeting Friday with an ODAF representative in Richmond.

As an aside, the day we announced CUSA intentions, the Coaches Caravan headed to Richmond. I thought it would be packed, but had about 25 alum (counting two other fraternity brothers and my two young sons). Was surprised with such an important date in ODU athletics that more folks did not take the opportunity to attend. Had unfettered access to Selig, Taylor, and Wilder, and damned good food. Pretty cool.

So what was it about playing Towson, UNCW, Ga State, Northeastern, Hofstra, Delaware and W&M that you loved so much that you can't seem to let it go?

The CUSA is a much better conference and a much better fit for a large, public University with good football and basketball teams and the desire to move up in the world.

The CAA, while you may have enjoyed it, would have been a giant anchor tied around our ankles, keeping us from ever moving up or improving.

I'm not bashing you, I'm just telling you that you are wrong. This move was a great step for ODU as the CAA was not just a piddling mid-major league, it was a piddling mid-major league that just lost VCU in basketball and has several other schools looking to get out as well (GMU for bball, Ga State left, Hofstra and NU quit football altogether, JMU and Delaware are also looking to leave eventually).

We made the right move. You can stop giving money or supporting the team if you want but your donations and money will be MORE than made up by new donors excited about the future of ODU.

RE: ODAF Donations
Smitty, I've heard from many median-to upper-range donors who do not receive emails, mailings, etc., and some who say that they are non-responsive. I've been fortunate that I do not fall into that category, but I do believe the ODAF staff need to step it up a notch in the area of customer service.

This year I was out of town for the Big Blue BBQ/football game and the Coach's Caravan in Norfolk, but I do plan to attend the one at Kingsmill next Thursday, and am hoping to see a big crowd. Those events are always fun and informative. I also haven't missed the Big Blue Breakfasts in several years, but I'm lucky to work close enough to ODU to be able to attend.

I think as our program grows, the staff of ODAF needs to grow as well. I agree that a few major donors can go a long way to building the program, but if a significant number of median-group donors were lost, it would be a major blow to the program.

RE: ODAF Donations
For one, they need to expand that stadium or build a new one ASAP. I have quite a hard time obligating $100 per month to ODUAF when I still won't be able to score tickets to a football game without paying out the rear on Craigslist.

Second, yes, the free beer was an issue that caused me to not donate anything last year. Not because paying for beer is going to crush me, but the BBR itself was an incentive to donate and it no longer is because I no longer even want to go in there. If I'm going to pay for my beer, I'm going to get good beer at a place all my friends can access. I already have my basketball season tickets and I like my seats.

Really, there is no incentive for me to donate any money. At the end of the day, whether I donate or not, I have my hoops seats and I pregame at a bar... and I am on the waiting list for football tickets.

Ever, just get on the waiting list. I did last fall. Was in the upper 2,000 to low 3,000 at the time. But because I was an ODAF member (they get first priority over non-members regardless of when you got on the list) I jumped to #147 on the waiting list when the offered up season tix once the current renewals were in. And I got season tickets. I don't give as much as $100 a month like you say. There are people on that list giving as little as $25 a month who got tix this way - I know because I know one person who scored tix this year. Now mine aren't great seats. I'm in the end zone (as far from the band as possible) but I have season tix.

Just get on the damn list. I will bet you $50 that if you do, and give as little as $25 a month, you'll move near enough to the top to get season tix next year. With NO EXPANSION of the stadium.

Whether I am right or wrong will be determined within 5 to 10 years. I hope I'm wrong but we'll see. Aside from that your post is not worth a comment.

It took them 2 months to acknowledge my 2012 contribution. Very organized apparently.

You can give as little as $100 a year to be an ODAF member. That moves you above non ODAF members on the list.
Obviously, the more you give, the more points you accrue, and the better your potential position.

I don't give as much to ODAF as I might; because I also give to the Dominion Fund every year as well.

The Dominion Fund is realistically probably a better use of your money anyhow... no offense to anyone by saying that on a sports board.

RE: ODAF Donations
I give to both. Plus the alumni assoc. You should donate based on your motivation. That is why TDM is not wrong. She made it clear that CUSA was not a good move long ago.

Personally I felt the exact same when ODU left the Sun Belt to move back to the same 1 bid league that they dominated in the early 80's. To me, that was the defining move that allowed several programs to separate from us. It also was the move that helped every school from the ECAC South to catch up to us. Hell even 17 years in the CAA finally took our women's program down to the CAA's level--another story for another day.

Coach's Caravan is a great place to be heard. I spent hours with BW and staff from the major gifts dept the night before we announced. I like to think those sessions carry a lot more weight than the anonymous stuff online. I feel like we are now around some programs that have ambition. And some have more impressive facilities that ODU can actually aspire to...finally.

RE: ODAF Donations
Had a meeting with an ODAF representative on Friday. Was great to get insight and vision from those making it happen.

Discussed the BBR beer issue, et al. and received responses such as "poor and late timing" and disappoinment with the level of ODAF support in the Richmond area. Specifically, beer issue is a liability and insurance issue, and getting the price to a reasonable $2/beer, was a major negotiation point with the current contractor.

Left the meeting more confident in our administration and our vision for the future. Recommend you get to a Caravan and get to know our staff. Sure made this middle-level donor feel heard and appreciated.
