uhhhh....ohhhh..... looks like someone got their feelings hurt by having someone question the lack of tickets sold by the Clemson fanbase for the Orange Bowl last year.

The truth is, Pitt and Syracuse have played each other every year since 1955. It is SU's second most played rival (and will be its most played in a year or so) and Pitt's third most played (tied with ND I think).

Pitt and Syracuse have an unusual respect for one another. It is sort of odd actually. Probably it has to do with the fact the teams have never peaked at the same time. Pitt's been down when SU has been up, and vice versa, so there hasn't been an awful lot on the line most of the times when the two teams have played, historically. Pitt has always been more preoccupied with PSU, WVU, and ND...pretty much in that order (switching WVU and ND sometimes). In hoops, SU has Georgetown , UConn and SJU while Pitt had WVU and Villanova, and more recently UConn.

That said, it has to be Syracuse. They bring so many fans to the game regardless of the opponent with the raging horde of Orange fans.

Why was it the Big East failed again?

Because Swofford and the Acc kept raiding the conference and making it unstable. That is the reason dude. But lets not derail threads with immature comments. Thats what I love about this board is that the posters here are very respectful (for the most part), and eloquent and well versed.

Then Pitt will develop a 'main' rivalry with Maryland.

Think about. Both were rivals with PSU and WVU. And the likelihood of long-term series with either of those teams isn't good. So they turn to each other for their rivalry.

Pitt seconday rivals will continue to be ND, SU, and now VT.

Cheers,
Neil

Carolina wants to have Georgia Tech in their division. There are more Carolina alumni living in the Atlanta area than in any place outside of the state of North Carolina. If Georgia Tech moves to the Atlantic, you might see Georgia Tech as Carolina's cross-over rival saying good-bye to NC State.

I hope that a Pitt/UMD rivalry takes off. Geographic proximity, rivalries between other pro teams (Caps/Pens, Ravens/Steelers), similar academic profiles, etc.

I have to speak up here. The current divisional alignment is EXTREMELY favorable to UNC at the expense of FSU in particular (and to a lesser extent, Clemson). If UNC losses a rival they want to keep I have no sympathy, as FSU vs. Ga Tech was a much bigger rivalry and that was trashed with little afterthought. For that matter, where's the love for Maryland, who doesn't get to play Pitt, Va Tech, or UNC in the current alignment?

Switch Maryland and Pitt and realign partners:

Duke - Wake
UNC - NCState
UVA - VTech
UMD - Pitt
GTech - FSU
Cuse - BC
Clemson - Miami

Why do we have the same divisions for every sport? It would seem having divisions for each sport would make for the best match ups and TV desirability.

Football is the only sport WITH divisions, as far as I know.

I'm afraid you switched a whole lot more than just Maryland and Pitt... you have UVa and Va Tech in different divisions (they are both Coastal now), and you have Cuse and BC in different divisions (they are both Atlantic now). Also, you put FSU and Miami in the same division, but they are not (they are crossover rivals now).

I've looked at an awful lot of division alignment scenarios - this is a complex issue. The best I've seen so far remains North & South (divide between Virginia and N. Carolina) but with Miami in the "North".

Uh, no.

We are already giving up a sellout every other year by losing the second big name OOC game to the asinine 9th conference game, no way do we want to trade another from FSU for UNC and their two stooges Duke and UVA.

Ahh the good old days of BigEastbbs were like that too...

That being said in the ACC, I think over time Pitt's primary conference rival ends up being VT or UMD. Syracuse will continue to be a big game on the schedule (its a nearly 60 year uninterrupted series and counting) and BC could be of interest again in the future.

That won't happen unless divisions or cross-over games are modified. Right now, Pitt and Maryland will not meet annually. It quite possibly could become one if some things are modified though.
