Even if the B12 did take UL and UCF before UC "highly unlikely" that would put UC in the ACC after they sorted out Maryland.

Texas names Charlie Strong coach

A new era in Texas football began Sunday when the Longhorns announced the hiring of Charlie Strong from Louisville.

Texas athletic director Steve Patterson praised Strong in a statement released Sunday afternoon as "a man of great integrity, with a wonderful family, who is well respected inside and outside the game."

"Our committee and former lettermen helped create an extensive selection criteria and after visiting with Charlie, it was clear he met them all," Patterson said. "He led championship defenses as an assistant, a resurgence at the University of Louisville with double-digit game winning seasons, and twice been selected conference coach of the year."

Strong, 53, replaces Mack Brown after 16 seasons. He arrived in Austin on Sunday afternoon and will be introduced at a Monday news conference.

"To follow a future Hall of Fame coach like Mack Brown, who built a program that had great success and a reputation of doing it with class and integrity, is extra special," Strong said in the statement. "The National Championship, BCS Bowl wins and all he accomplished in 16 years built on the Longhorn legacy and makes it such an exciting place to be."

Strong will be the first black head coach of any men's sport in school history. UT president Bill Powers called it "a historic day for The University of Texas and a historic hire for our football team."

Strong takes over the Longhorns after four years at Louisville, his first head-coaching job. During his tenure, the Cardinals went 37-15, won two conference titles and an Allstate Sugar Bowl victory over No. 3 Florida last year.

Strong was named Big East Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2012, and led Louisville to a 12-1 record and a 36-9 victory over Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28.

"This was a difficult decision because the University of Louisville gave me my first opportunity as a head coach," Strong said. "I have so much respect for President [James] Ramsey and [athletic director] Tom Jurich. They have been great to me and my family, and it was very hard to say goodbye, but they know this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

Under Strong's tutelage, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater developed into a potential No. 1 overall draft pick and defensive end Marcus Smith earned All-America and AAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Nine more Cardinals earned All-AAC honors this season.

He inherits a Texas program that went 8-5 and 7-2 in the Big 12 in Brown's final season and lost to Oregon 30-7 in the Valero Alamo Bowl. After a 1-2 start to the season, the Longhorns won their first six Big 12 games and would've clinched an outright conference title with a victory over Baylor in the regular season finale.

Brown resigned on Dec. 14 and finished his Texas career with a record of 158-48.

"Coach Brown developed such a strong bond with his players, the lettermen, community and high school coaches in this state, and that's something I hope to build on," Strong said. "He made everyone feel at home."

In a Sunday news conference, Louisville's Jurich said Strong exceeded every expectation in his four years as head coach but could not turn down a chance to lead the Longhorns.

I really don't see any way that Maryland stays in the ACC; this will get settled as a hard deadline approaches. The B10 money long-term is just too attractive for a Maryland athletic department that has struggled financially in the past. Consistent with that, Louisville goes next season and I don't see this situation impacting UC's possibility for conference change at all unless a court thows out the ACC GOR and we have conference Armageddon once again.

Plus, people aren't really thinking clearly. If the B1G doesn't get Maryland, they'll get someone else that'll need replacing. That plus the added fact that the ACC will then have an unbalanced schedule, means that there would be more spots opening up than there are now.

Unless they take UConn...

Like IndyCat said, this will all likely be worked out in the 11th hour and Maryland will join the B10 as planned sometime later this year, although it would be great if we could get one more shot next year at a Bilgewater-less UL team to get the Keg back.

Maryland is going to the Big 10, it is just a matter of when and how much it costs. Even if Maryland has to foot the $50 million exit fee (Which is probably not going to happen), they would make that up eventually and I'd bet the Big 10 will help them with it to boot. In the next couple months, I would guess there is a compromise worked out between Maryland and the ACC. It is in both parties interests to get it done sooner than later.

And the ACC already had a vote on UConn and UConn did not garner enough votes for an invite. Unless the ACC members had a change of heart it would seem that the ACC ship has sailed for UConn. Their best hope is the Big10.

Realignment isn't about performance on the field. If that were the case Maryland and Rutgers would not be headed to the b10.

With that said - Maryland is going to the b10. Just a matter of what the buyout amount is going to be.

I think the biggest issues for UConn to the ACC is location and culture. The southern wing of the conference (and also the most football-centric Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech and I will throw in NC State) do not want UConn. They are gritting their teeth that Boston College and Syracuse are in the league but played along nice with with their additions because Swofford told them it would increase their television deal. In an ideal world to those schools the ACC would be a 10-12 team league all located below the Mason-Dixon Line.

I did't say sports programs were the ONLY factors.

I believe the acc will eventually have to add a few more teams, outside their current footprint, in order to increase tv revenue through the acc network. This has worked for the b10 and the acc will want to do the same.

Someone should rename this the "All things realignment thread -2014"

I'm loving the UL boards right now. Some (actually most) of the posters over there are so delusional. Great threads where fans asking whether they could land such coaches as Chris Petersen or Mark Richt. Many over there think James Franklin or Rich Rodriguez are beneath them (and they are telling Arizona and Vandy fans that their programs are also beneath their own). Many posters even think a current coordinator, even all-star ones like Chad Morris or Kirby Smart, are well beneath them.

And UC can't make something happen. They can try and position themselves well and build relationships but they can't make a conference offer an invite.

It's the equivalent of a girl wanting a guy to ask her out and making herself as pretty, attractive and available as possible but in the end if he isn't interested because she's not his type she's not going to be asked out no matter how hot she is.

If she puts out and the guy isn't gay, he'll ask her out...
