Rolleyes Windows 7 and new laptop question.
Upopn first boot up over the weekend with a new laptop that has Windows 7 on it I have been experiencing some crazy issues.

I repeatedly, in normal mode have the mouse/cursor lock up in the "blue loading circley" for no real reason. When it gets like this I can't open any programs...can even pull up Task Manager to see if has other tasks running. Nothing really shows in the systray to say something is running. When it happens it also kills my ability to shut the computer down the correct way.

The weird part is, in safe mode, everything is working like it should. No freezes or anything.

I have no idea if I am experiencing a Windows issue or a hardware issue. About the only thing I have done is put my Norton on and downloaded the following: Firefox, CCleaner, Malware Bytes, Qucktime, Open Office (Apache ed.), AIM, and all the Windows updates I needed to do.

I did call Lenovo tech support to get help with the cursor earlier today and it did help...but upone using it tonigh the cursor loading lock came back up.

It may be Norton; it's a serious resource hog. I recommend Avast. It's what I use on my computers at home, and I haven't had a single problem with a virus.

Oh, and did I mention it's free? If not, then I will. It's free. Free and reliable.

Yes, it's most likely Norton. I always use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a free product and does a pretty good job. If I am working on a computer for someone I always remove Norton and McAfee. Both are worse than having spyware.

I quit using Symantec antivirus products long ago. They tend to cause as many problems as they solve...

RE: Windows 7 and new laptop question.
Not really had any issues with Norton ever. And have not had a simmilar issue on my other PCs that I have norton on.

***************

I stopped by Best Buy and talked with a Geek Squad guy to see if it was something "simple" and not really product failure issue. I was able to show him the cursor lock up and the freeze. He said I could exchange it. Only problem was my model is sold out through their system/discontinued (figures I guess because of the price). So if need be, I can work out an exchange but their Geek Squad guy said do a system restore and start over and that maybe some sort of instillation from Windows Update and what not did not install properly due to whatever and see if that solved it. I have a window to return/exchange the laptop.

Working through that restore process now.

What good is the Geek Squad if they won't do that for you?

Heh...

Well, considering the computer is at 4 days of being on and I haven't put any real documents on it... the one click restore I could do at home and not have to sit there while they did it.

And actually, the restore and start over worked fine.... no lock ups...everything is smooth.

It is software if it doesn't manifest itself in safe mode. And I concur, Norton is a steaming pile... get it out of there.

Also ... I still use AIM, but with Finch (command line UI of Pidgin) as the client.

RE: Windows 7 and new laptop question.
Shh.. i gotta go get two of mine repaired starting today... The Hard Drive died on my Toshiba yesterday, wont' even boot... (and which means I can't get to the backup functions...) and I FINALLY found someone who can possibly replace the LCD on my other one for under $200...

But the first thing I did on both of them was dump Norton/Symantec... I'm an Avira fan myself, but I'm probably going Avast after I get them repaired.

As for AIM.. i miss the old days of having Trillian (best cross-service Messenger service I ever used.)

cosign. Avast is the bomb, while programs like Norton and Adware both clash with my computer and render it comatose
