Matt LoVecchio, who played poorly in Notre Dame's spring game and appeared to be losing out in the battle for starting quarterback with Carlyle Holiday, has decided to transfer.
A Notre Dame spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday that LoVecchio has asked to be released from his scholarship and that the school has granted the request.
LoVecchio led Notre Dame to seven straight victories as a freshman in 2000, but took a step back last season, losing his job to Holiday. LoVecchio appeared in seven games and completed 34-of-69 passes for 287 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.
New Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham, formerly of Stanford, has brought the West Coast offense to South Bend, which might not favor LoVecchio, a drop-back passer. During the recent spring game, LoVecchio completed six-of-14 passes for 58 yards with three interceptions.
Holiday started the final nine games last season and completed 73-of-144 passes for 784 yards with three touchdowns and seven interceptions.
