39,032 for UTSA VS Texas State
Plus UTSA QB bagged his hish school sweetheart with an engagement ring!

I am sure UTSA did a lot of promotional work. Whatever UTSA did in promotions, some of us would like to know for our school to duplicate.

Congrats to RoadRunners for a fine season and sure do look forward to next year as the invitees come into the conference.

RE: 39,032 for UTSA VS Texas State
Good turnout was mostly due to this being sort of a rivalry game for us.

Overall it was a great season. Beating Tx State was just icing on the cake.

Looking forward to next season and stiffer competition in C-USA

How can you call the first game between these teams a rivalry?

That's why I said "sort of." There's fans from both schools that want it to be an annual game. Lots of animosity between the schools, due to proximity, similar student base, and the perception that UTSA is going to a better conference.

Could it develop into a rivalry? Sure, especially if we were going to stay in the same conference. Personally, though, I feel any sense of rivalry will die since we won't/can't meet again for the foreseeable future.

They've met in other sports. I was at the game and the crowd was legit. The lower bowl was nearly full and numerous people in the 200 and 300 levels.

UTSA vs. TXST has been a rivalry in Olympic sports for almost as long as UTSA has an athletics program, so the football quasi-rivalry is feeding off of that.

They have the regional thing going with their other sports.

The large contingent of TX State fans (some friends of mine were among them) who made the trip out to SA is a good indicator of that. Although, that helped UTSA out with their attendance number significantly. Nothing wrong with that.

Hardly a caveat. Didn't y'all play OU for your home opener? Attendance is attendance.

This shows the importance of having a tight geographic conference if you are not a conference like the SEC.

Close rivalries improve attendance. Not just because the other schools' fans travel but because local interest will be higher and student interest will certainly be higher.

Wonder how attendance would be for UTEP/TSU game? Any thoughts on this?

One reason why everyone at UTSA was high on CUSA. 3 additional Texas teams to play along with easy travel to LA and OK.

Sorry but playing on the east coast doesn't really appeal to me. Its not like we are going to be pulling recruits from anywhere other than TX, LA, CA and the occassional FL guy.

UTEP did play OU, but OU fans did not represent as large of a number as TX ST did at UTSA. And for the record, our attendance average sucked at 29,000 for the year at a 3-9 record.

TX ST helped your attendance. Nothing wrong with that. It beats chicken mass-murder.

UTEP helps SMU's home attendance too. We'll do the same for you. No need to fret.

UTEP has no history or proximity to TX St, so I doubt they would impact our attendance (also a helluva drive from El Paso). NMSU probably brings 4-7K fans (depending on how their team is doing).

I don't think it would have any impact at all. I don't remember UTEP playing Texas St. in anything either. So it would just be another game. UTEP fans would "feel" like we were playing an FCS foe. Now, with utsa I think it'll be a semi-quasi rivalry only because they "COPIED" most of our traditions. And they can't deny it because it isn't like they've been around athletically for a long time. Admit it you dogs. 04-chairshot

Like any large Texas city, we've got a ton of former El Pasoans here in S.A. (including me). Even if they're not UTEP alumni, I think the name recognition will bring folks out. If we can get 25K for a Northwestern Oklahoma State team, that no one has heard of, then I imagine the UTEP games will do just fine.

A) You have no way of quantifying that, and B) it's irrelevant anyway.

You'll forgive me for being blunt, but it just seems like you are trying to find ways to put an asterisk on our attendance while exempting yours. Don't worry, we'll pass you up (again) very soon.

2012 AVERAGE ATTENDANCE:

UTEP: 29,374
UTSA: 29,226

Just a hundy less than UTEP despite y'all seeing an increase of 3000 fans / game this season.

Oh that's rich 03-lmfao From a school whose alma mater is copied from UT Austin, verbatim!

I'm curious though, what do you think we copied - the blue and orange? Hardly unique. We had the hand sign before you, so if anything, we could claim you copied us on that one. However you'll notice we don't claim that, because we're not anal about it.

I think UTSA and UTEP both have unique individual qualities that can be equally appreciated by everyone.
