Why Tulane?
Well, I've read through a few threads about the Tulane move and lots of baffling comments about "why Tulane"? Strange since Tulane is a charter member of CUSA and won more conference titles that any other university until "K". But, since so many are ignorant as to why the Big East would even consider Tulane then I provide this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/c6adk0xulnufzy...lution.pdf

Can't make the link work:
Tulane University Athletics & NOLA – a Renaissance, a Revolution "a great city, a great university, huge untapped athletic potential in collegiate athletics"

The City of New Orleans is indelibly part of the fabric of modern day college athletics. The Tulane University of Louisiana is ingrained as a part of the City of New Orleans. Tulane is making a statement regarding its future in collegiate athletics and a committed Tulane University is an asset to the world of major college athletics.

Tulane …

 Since 2008, renewed commitment to athletics, with $150M in Facilities investments  In 2012, will break ground on new, on campus Football stadium  In 2011, completed construction of a new basketball/volleyball practice facility  In 2012, completed phase one of a multi-phase renovation of its basketball arena  In 2012, begun development of a multi-sports “Athletics Village” & potential Indoor practice facility for football  Is an AAU University – Tulane President Scott Cowen was just voted Chair of the AAU New Orleans …

 Is a recruiting hotbed  Is a major media market  Is rated best American city to visit by Travel + Leisure  Is a hub of sports & entertainment activity  A little Lagniappe

A closer look…

 Recruiting hotbed – A look at the fertile territory doors that get kicked wide open by adding a school like Tulane. Think of the potential not only for Tulane but for the other members in a BCS conference. o New Orleans is the 2nd ranked city in the country for producing FBS football recruits per capita o New Orleans produces the 18th most total FBS football recruits in the country o Of the top states producing FBS recruits, Louisiana ranks 6th  Of the other 9 top states in the top 10, all have between 2-4 BCS schools in the state  Louisiana is the only top 10 state with only 1 BCS school o Louisiana is 2nd overall in state per capita producing recruits o A yahoo.com article in September of 2010 ranked Louisiana 6th with 68 players on NFL rosters, but ranked Louisiana first per capita. Number 2 in the per capita rankings? Neighboring Mississippi which is just steps away from New Orleans. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdow...nfl-272416  Renewed commitment to athletics, with $150 mln in Facilities investments o After Hurricane Katrina Tulane President Scott Cowen said to alumni, donors and fans “my focus is on making sure Tulane University and the New Orleans community is not only back on solid footing but that it is on fertile ground to be better than we were before. Once that is done I will turn my focus to athletics.” o That mission was accomplished which lead to The Playbook: Inside the Game Plan for Tulane Football http://www.tulanegreenwave.com/playbook/ o President Scott Cowen and Athletic Director Rick Dickson were able to sell the potential of Tulane Football to some key players in our renaissance. Major professional sports businessmen Tom Benson (Saints, Hornets) and Avie Glazer (Buccaneers, Manchester United) have taken a keen interest in backing the future of Tulane Football and driving it towards success. o These highly successful sports businessmen believe in the potential of Tulane Football and Tulane Athletics which leads me to one thought “it has to be obvious to others, doesn’t it? With their potential it seems like a no brainer. Tulane Football and Tulane Athletics is just a step away from becoming a major player and contributing mightily to a fruitful conference.”

 New Baseball stadium – 2008 - completed o http://www.tulanegreenwave.com/facilitie...rchin.html

 New basketball/volleyball practice facility – 2011 - completed o http://www.tulanegreenwave.com/genrel/111711aab.html gallery o Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated said “Was blown away by new $16 million hoops practice facility at Tulane today. @GreenWaveHoops has as nice a building as any in country.”

- Click for info & photo

 Basketball arena upgrade – Phase I completed 2012. Phase II ongoing and to be completed in 2013 o http://www.tulanegreenwave.com/facilitie...house.html o http://www.tulanegreenwave.com/sports/m-...12aab.html

 New Football stadium to be completed prior to 2014 season o http://www.tulanestadium.com/ o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuC8g-POCt8

 Association of American Universities Member since 1958 – Tulane President Scott Cowen named Chair of the AAU o http://admission.tulane.edu/livecontent/...-chair.php http://www.thehullabaloo.com/news/articl...f6878.html http://tulane.edu/news/releases/pr_10232015.cfm  Major college media market – New Orleans ranked #5 college football market viewership o http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/2012/bi...um=twitter http://www.tvb.org/media/file/TVB_Market...anks2.pdf New Orleans rated best American city to visit by Travel + Leisure o http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2...erica.html o Let’s be serious, we all want our fan bases to travel well and frankly you just can’t argue the fact that visiting teams with large fan-bases would flock to this city. This would be great on several levels.  Hub of sports and entertainment activity o 5 men’s Final Fours & 3 women’s Final Fours in addition to hosting earlier rounds o NFL host of 10 Superbowls o o World renowned festivals  All new multi-sports “Athletics Village” & potential Indoor practice facility for football o http://www.nola.com/tulane/index.ssf/201...hropi.html o Tulane Athletic Director Rick Dickson went public with the information on a local radio station on 11-19-12. If you want to hear what he had to say you can click the link below, go to The Talk of New Orleans with Kaare Johnson, go to November 19, click Hour 1 and then skip the 13:23 mark for the entire segment with the AD talking about everything Tulane Athletics related including the investment. At about the 43:10 mark he talks about the Olympic/Athletes Village. http://www.wistradio.com/page.php?page_id=8070 o Construction/design plans have already been shown to many of the upper level donors to the University and Athletics. The Village will be located an estimated 1 mile from campus. This Village will happen relatively quick due to the fact that once ground breaks in December 2012/January 2013 on the football stadium a

o

o

o

few NCAA sports will have no home. Men’s & women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis and the fields/track where all student athletes use as workout space will be gone. At the very minimum the Athletic Village will contain space for new venues for: Track & Field/Cross Country, men’s & women’s tennis facilities, sand volleyball courts (we have a NCAA team) and a few fields that will be used for sports such as football, soccer, baseball, rugby, etc. Word is that early reports say that both the NCAA track & field and tennis facilities will have grandstands/stadiums so we can host big events at these facilities. There are also supposed to be locker rooms, coaches office spaces, concessions, equipment storage and training rooms on site. This project is happening. o Indoor Practice Facility (IPF) Football – 2013-2015 (TBD) The last nugget that goes with the Athletic Village is that after all the above projects are completed they conclude all of this with IPF project. There is more and more talk that this might be in the first phase of the project rather than the final phase. Right now Tulane gets to use the New Orleans Saints facilities anytime they need to as long as the Saints are not practicing at the facility at the same time Tulane needs it. This is the only project that is not “set in stone” however it has been acknowledged that there would be space for such facility at the Village. They are leaving that space open for such a facility and heavy athletics donors are pressing for this to be a facility Tulane builds. Many believe that soon after the stadium has broken ground the IPF plans will become more formal publicly. There are some politics involved with the stadium so this project will likely not be acknowledged until it is well underway. Tulane also gets continued usage of the Mercedes Benz Superdome as an alternate practice and game-day venue when needed.

 A little Lagniappe o Tulane Athletic Department home base – James Wilson Center  Word is once the stadium and athletics village is complete, the home of Green Wave athletics will be getting a major renovation on the interior, especially focusing on the football operations center. o Tulane is giving more accessibility to new head football Coach Curtis Johnson regarding adding junior college transfers to supplement the fantastic recruiting start he is off to. o Tulane is close to the implementation of adding additional majors offered at the University. Majors that other peer institutions have available that we currently do not have. o Why they will love New Orleans and what Tulane has to offer  http://tulaneadmissionsmrithi.blogspot.c...lovin.htmlhttp://tulaneadmissionsmrithi.blogspot.c...art-2.html

Tulane University Athletics & NOLA – a Renaissance, a Revolution "a great city, a great university, huge untapped athletic potential in collegiate athletics"

I will save the details about additional new majors being added that would be called “athletic friendly” as some call them. I will save you the details about how all of the sudden within the last year or so we seem to be taking in kids from local high schools that we have not before at the rate we are doing now so we can be on par with what our peer institutions allow. I won’t bore you with the fact that the University has increased the athletics budget from being at the bottom of CUSA to now being near the top while gradually increasing it each year and it is still rising. Locally people have said “Tulane won’t spend” on top coaches but the fact is with our recent coaching search for men’s football and men’s basketball we went out and tried to get some of the best available coaches out there – extending offers into the millions. Conference affiliation has surely played a major role in those cases but personally I think we lucked out and landed one hell of a sleeper in Curtis ‘CJ’ Johnson as the new head football coach. There is also talk about how the academic side of things might be getting a little less resistance than we have had in the past. Just this week after a local reported that has been highly critical of the Tulane administrations support for athletics, Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson replied with this: Within a decade after Hurricane Katrina Tulane will have built or highly renovated just about every square inch of its athletics footprint, including adding to it with the addition of the Village. Both the new stadium and renovated arena are expandable. This does not seem like the same old Tulane people think about. All of these things are in motion (which should help appealing to better recruits in all sports) and Tulane should be is great position to be under consideration under the next power moves by conferences that are looking for a great academic fit along with the potential Tulane & New Orleans has to offer a conference. New Orleans is a great city, Tulane is a great University and both are located in the heart of a talent rich region. Don’t take my word for it, I will repeat what I said before. Take the words and the actions of two major players in this renaissance – The Glazers & The Bensons. The Glazers are owners of the Tampa Bay Bucs and global super icon Manchester United soccer club. The Bensons own the New Orleans Saints & New Orleans Hornets. These two powerful families have had a key hand in Tulane Athletics over the last 4 years. These highly successful sports “it has to be obvious to others, doesn’t it? With their potential it seems like a no brainer. Tulane Football and Tulane Athletics is just a step away from becoming a major player and contributing mightily to a fruitful conference.” Taking into account the content within this piece, there is absolutely no reason why Tulane Athletics is not primed to make a strong thrust into complete relevance in the world of college football and collegiate athletics very soon. When you take a deep look at it, it just makes sense. ~ ”This One Belongs to the Wave” http://onlyattulane.com/ http://admission.tulane.edu/trutu/

Tulane had some non-field advantages and caught a break. Now step it up.

I expect C-USA to react quickly. Then I expect the ACC to make it's move, then the Big East will act again.

C-USA is becoming Sunbelt 2.0.
