ECU fans... your view of Skip Holtz as head coach
Since your fanbase knows him very well and he did well there, what is your opinion of him as a head coach at schools like USM or UTEP? If possible, try to leave out your personal disappointment in him for leaving ECU for USF. I have not heard of either school being interested in him but since he was just fired, I thought I'd ask the people that know him best.

He's a good coach. It would depend on the staff he could assemble at each place. For the most part a Skip team will be competitive against most teams it plays, which can be good and bad as we would play teams better than us close and teams with less talent than us close. Resulted in some good wins and some bad losses. He'd be a fine hire either place.

He's a great asset to the local community as well. He'd be a good hire for almost any school.

A combination of things. Didn't have his best assistant from ECU with him, and comparatively ECU is an easier place to win than USF. From a facilities, fan base, and commitment perspective ECU had a pretty big edge over most of the teams in C-USA. USF on the other hand compared to it's competition in the Big East lagged behind in those areas.

ECU has a bigger fanbase, better facilities, and more commitment to family and football.... that is a good soil for a coach to grow..... not much grows at a commuter school with no history, where 5 years ago the coaches offices were in trailers.

As long as he gets rid of his OC he's great. I doubt he could find another DC as good as Hudson either, but he can put together a decent staff. He did a great job rebuilding ECU, but he is too risk adverse on offense. Typical series is off-tackle, off-tackle, bubble screen, punt. If he could find an up and coming OC and give him control over play calling I have no doubt that he could be a successful head coach in CUSA, MWC, WAC, Sunbelt, nBE, or ACC. Hell he would even work well in the BIG with a run based, ball control offense.

RE: ECU fans... your view of Skip Holtz as head coach
He did a great job over a 5 year period here at ECU and he would likely have still been here if he hadnt left. His success was in a large part due to the staff he put around him. Skip himself isnt a great play caller and is conservative and the offense he runs resembles his conservative tendancies. Finch and Skip lost alot of close games here against really good teams because of this philosophy. The defense under Hudson was adequate and sometimes dominating enough to win games on their own if the offense could only score a few more points. He is a good coach but he is only as good as the staff that he surrounds himself with. Problem at USF is due to a lack of winning even though a great majority of his losses were very close losses. The only thing that matters to schools and a fanbase is winning and not a moral victory. He was a victim of his greatest flaw which is playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

Positives: Good X & O's coach, fundraiser and public speaker
Negatives: Bad Recruiter, Not Offensive minded, Conservative

Skip took full advantage of the player who were left for him, but was one of the worst recruiters we've ever had. He left the program in bad shape for our current coach. I truely beleive he saw it coming and was one of the reasons he left.

He'd most likely win more games than Ellis Johnson and Mike Price in a season. So each school could do worse.

I used to blame Fitch for our offense as well, until I talked to one of our players on Beale Street during our second Liberty Bowl trip. He was joking about how funny it was that people hated on Fitch because he had little to do with the offense. This player said that it was Skip's offense. So unless he is willing to hire a good OC and turn over control to him the offense you've seen at ECU and USF is what you'll see with Skip.

His offense was kind of bland but it did lead to a very successful period here in football. I'd see no reason not to interview him for the job.

RE: ECU fans... your view of Skip Holtz as head coach
Skip is a good guy, but I think the thing that sticks out should be the environment, facilities, football first mindset he succeeded under in Greenville. ECU is built to succeed in CUSA....everyone has done it except for the ridiculously underqualified John Thompson. Skip got it re-organized and won a couple of champs with some upperclassmen led teams. He failed to finish against SEC competition the Bowl games and lost some games along the way he should have won.

I think Skip is going to have a hard time succeeding at a place that doesn't have advantages. He thought USF had advantages, but was mistaken...they needed a good recruiter and a good X and O coach...Skip is neither of those, IMO.

He's a good coach. Not a great play caller. He did assemble a good staff in Greenville whereas he inherited most of the old USF staff. He is a good hire for a mid-major. However, it was Greg Hudson's defense that won us games.

RE: ECU fans... your view of Skip Holtz as head coach
Good coach with a lot of connections who can assemble a very experienced staff. His OC at ECU and USF is old school and is dated in my opinion.

I and most ECU fans agree that 50% of his success was due to Greg Hudson being our Defensive Coordinator (he left and went to FSU right before Skip left).

He is NOT a good recruiter. His classes were always below average.

I wouldn't hesitate to pick him up if I was in need of a quality coach. Key would be to have the money for him to get a high quality offensive coordinator.

The only real downside is after you get to 6 wins he will shop around and constantly look for a new opportunity. Be ready to hire someone else if he has any success.

The biggest problem I had with Coach Skip was each year he was on the open market, looking, and want his contract adjusted for more monies. It is true Coach Hudson defense ruled as I told him once how good his team played. His response, "they have no option"....
Coach Hudson was the man.

The good thing now for ecu is we have Coach Ruff who is all the things you need in a good coach except one concern of loyalty to a head defensive coach who is not getting the job done.
