Things are certainly happening - Sonny's going to Cal and he doesn't have to wait for a bowl game.

If the Lib bowl told the Tech AD, orally or in writing that Tech would be invited regardless, and witnessed by the WAC comm then that is a legal contract which should have been honored. I would support any school under those circumstances. I am, however, wondering why the Lib bowl or WAC comm hasnt come forward and elaborated. There were three parties involved which included Tech AD, Lib Bowl, and WAC comm. The only one we have heard from or who tells this story in the Tech AD. Wonder why the delay.

WAC commissioner came forward immediately. You must have missed it:

Monday, The Times contacted a Liberty Bowl official and WAC interim commissioner Jeff Hurd.

Hurd supported Van De Velde’s claim.

“The Liberty Bowl executive director (Steve Ehrhart) said Saturday evening that he had given Bruce Van De Velde a guarantee that LT would receive an invite,” Hurd told The Times in an email while in New York.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Tech athletic director has given THREE versions now. First he said Tech had a WRITTEN contract to play in the bowl. Later he said that contract actually states Tech would be invited IF NO Big 12 team was available. Then he said I-Bowl told him late Sat that they would invite Tech regardless of other outcomes.

WAC commish was contacted Monday and stated in an E-mail from out of town that HE had talked to I-Bowl and was told by a person that the Tech AD was advised Tech would be invited.

Shreveport Times contacted Lib Bowl on Monday and they were UNAWARE of the statements by Tech AD and WAC commish. Advised the Times that it would be looked into but still no response.

So, three versions from Tech AD, a version from WAC commish that Lib Bowl said Tech was in (he was not present nor actually hear the offer), and a Lib Bowl version stating they were unaware of the "charges".

Looks like a lot of he says and she says so far. Lets wait for the Liberty Bowl response. EDIT NOTE: You state WAC Commish came out immediately. I was not aware of that. Were his first comments similar to what he told the Times Monday morning?

His story has been the same, it has just been reported at different times.

1. Had a written agreement for invitation if no Iowa St on Friday
2. Had a verbal agreement for inviation no matter what on Saturday

Here's the kicker: The Liberty Bowl always wanted Iowa St. Their plans were to trade Tech to the Heart of Dallas Bowl for Iowa St. When NIU made the BCS game, it made Iowa St an at-large team and the Liberty Bowl was able to pick them without trading Tech.

Tech AD has said he was stunned that NIU got the BCS game. He did not see that coming until it happened. I'm sure the Liberty Bowl was pleasantly surprised too.

I also find it funny when people say, “Your AD should have known NIU was gonna make the Orange Bowl.”

How so? Can anyone think of any team all season that jumped 8 spots in the BCS after beating one team? Not even A&M did that beating Alabama.

RE: LaTech President Statement
Not only am I wondering about the wording of this "guarantee" but also the timing. When did this discussion happen?

There was not an extra Big 12 team out there before the fallout that left Oklahoma out of a BCS bowl.

If it was before last Saturday night when the B1G game finished, I don't think you can hold the LB to that.

If your AD was shocked by NIU making the Orange, he is an even bigger idiot than I originally thought. Once Louisville beat Rutgers on Thursday, it was a lock at that the MAC winner was going. The surprise should have been Wisconsin knocking Oklahoma out of a spot....but again, that was known on Saturday night.

No one was blindsided by any of this. At the very least, you knew there was a good chance that things were going to shake out how they did. Your AD took a foolish gamble and lost.

What a shame that in a state dominated by LSU, LA Tech turned down a chance to come together with ULM to put on an incredibly entertaining game that would have been great for North Louisiana and drawn some nice TV ratings.

True that. NIU only had to jump five spots. I had a feeling that was happening just because it makes for warm and fuzzies.

How the heck could someone who actually gives a flip and is close to the situation at hand not see that coming???

Whoa whoa whoa.....5 spots? I thought they were ranked 23rd going into last weekend. I could be wrong but I didn't think it was a lock.

No, they were 21 going into the game. Was foreseeable.

You are right. Nebraska getting killed by UW wasn't but I guess it didn't really matter.

The Louisville/Rutgers game was meaningless. Oklahoma would have gone to a BCS game if NIU didn't finish in the Top 16 of the BCS rankings.

Tech AD was told that if Kent St didn't make a BCS game (NIU wins the game), if Oklahoma beats TCU, and if Kansas St beat Texas (2 BCS bids for Big XII), they would be invited by the Liberty Bowl and traded to the Heart of Dallas Bowl for Iowa St.

It would have been better to know that the winner of the Kent St / NIU game was going to a BCS bowl and the Big XII was guaranteed to only have 1 BCS team. If that was the situation, we could have accepted the Independence Bowl on any day of the week, because it was the only prospect.

-Big East: Correct. I lost track of the revolving door that was the Top 25 and thought Rutgers was ranked before the game, in which case it would have been significant. So yeah....the BE and B1G games were irrelevant.

-It was more clear that the MAC champ was going to play than people are saying if you look who was in front of them and account for the computer points jump by playing (and beating) a one-loss team. As I said, it wasn't certain....but he should have known there was a good enough chance that it wasn't worth the gamble--high risk, low reward (all that to play Purdue?). What is the difference in bowl payouts?

I agree. He should have known there was a chance... and a pretty good chance too.

It wasn't about the money, it was about playing in Dallas vs Shreveport, against Big 10 vs Sun Belt, New Years Day vs Dec 28. But when the Liberty Bowl guaranteed him a spot regardless of what happened with the BCS, it didn't matter what happened with NIU at that point.

It was a bad situation, I understand his reasoning, it's over, and I think everyone has moved on.
