Exclamation Dan Hawkins might be the next UTEP head football coach
According to local radio personality Steve Kaplowitz who hosts "Sports Talk", a source keeps insisting that former Boise State and Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins is the next head football coach of the UTEP Miners. Nothing is for certain just yet though:

"I'm not used to getting scoops from callers, but @86Torker is 99.9% sure that Dan Hawkins is the next UTEP head FB coach. Keep an eye on it."

“@86Torker: @chad600espn I'm telling you bro, Hawkins is the man. STAMP IT!”

I'm still not convinced. The guys was saying that a week ago, and there's been nothing anywhere else on the internet to support it. If it is him, I'm curious what everyone's opinion is. He was very successful at Boise, but layed a major egg at CU (of course he inherited a mess there). I think we could do worse. Our AD has a pretty good track record with his hires, so if in fact that's his choice, I'll trust that was his best option.

Interesting, and probably a good hire for UTEP

I think he'd be great. CU has become a graveyard for coaches. They have the money to hire the best. They hire the best. The best fails miserably.

I can't blame Hawkins for what happened in Colorado. That place is college footballs biggest dumpster fire and not even he could have saved that program

He could be a great hire; just need to research what went on at both Boise and Colo beyond the scoreboard (i.e. to what extent did he build Boise? To what extent was Colo a complete mess when he got there).

I'll miss him in the broadcast booth, though. He was really good.

Good point. The scandal going on at Colo when he got there had to be cleaned up but you would think he could have turned it around by year 3 or 4. Need to find out if there just wasn't any support from the univ by way of facilities and recruiting budget, budget for assistants, etc.

I tweeted him before Price retired because I was pretty sure Price would not be back. I asked him if he was interested in coaching again and he said yes, if the situation was right.

From his point of view he needs to find out if UTEP (or anyplace else he might consider) is going to give him the support he needs to be successful vs his conference competition. If UTEP wants the football program to get over the hump then they need to make sure they are serious enough to give the next coach the tools he needs.

Word now is that "several sources" pointing to Hawkins.

"Several sources inside the athletic department say they are hearing the former Boise State and Colorado coach and current ESPN personality is hammering out details with Bob Stull. Nothing confirmed but that's where the noise is."

UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull on Dan Hawkins:

“I’ve known him a long time, he’s a great coach, he’d be a great success, but I haven’t decided on anybody. I’m still talking to people,” Stull said from an undisclosed location.

He did indicate that he would like to have a coach in place to introduce at the Dec. 17 men’s basketball game against nationally ranked UNLV at the Don Haskins Center.

Stull did offer up another interesting piece of athletic department news that will be in the Saturday El Paso Times.

"from an undisclosed location" that makes him sound like he's hunkered down in some underground bunker figuring out the best way to invade France or something.
