RE: Alright Pitt fans. Question?
Think it had something to do w/ people from WV being so poor that the only way they could travel across the Ohio River to get to work was in a basket or hoop.

RE: Alright Pitt fans. Question?
I think they were so unskilled, they could only get work putting metal hoops on barrels.

RE: Alright Pitt fans. Question?
Yeah, We had to remove the Falls Fountain from the Ohio river here as many Hoosiers drowned trying to swim out to get a drink of water !

It is essentially the West Virginia version of hillbilly.

The entomology is described here: http://wikibin.org/articles/hoopie.html

Actually, the term, "Hillbilly" originates from WV. I saw it on the History Channel, lol.

RE: Alright Pitt fans. Question?
The story I had heard about it is what OrangeXtreme mentioned. They had a lot of unskilled workers and all they could do was put the metal hoops on barrels.

RE: Alright Pitt fans. Question?
An insult (worse than hillbilly) given to residents of West Virginia. According to history, the city of East Liverpool OH, across the river from WV, was an important maker of pottery. West Virginia residents looking for work in the area were only skilled enough to bang together the metal strips that would make the hoops needed for barrel construction.
