RE: Skip Holtz new coach at LaTech???
It seems like the assistants he would hire would be the key. He sounds like he has everything you would want from a head coach, but questionable offense and recruiting. Right?

Tom Dienhart ‏@BTNTomDienhart
I have confirmed an earlier report by a Baton Rouge radio station that Skip Holtz has been offered the Louisiana Tech job. Stay tuned.

I know it's frustrating, but do you want to go from a 9-3 season to a 3-9 season? Neither does your AD.. Hopefully they got the right person tabbed for you guys..

the AD won't be around much longer since they are just going to let his contract expire

yeah, 2015 is right around the corner. 03-confused

I don't know if I'm buying this. How would a radio guy from Baton Rouge know before anybody else?

I'm still holding out that it's Polian. I like what I saw of him on his resume

RE: Skip Holtz new coach at LaTech???
Skip is a decent coach, but understand that he will be looking to jump ship when he starts to win. His stock has plummetted since USF. The key as was said above will be who his assistants are. I am not sure who he will get, but I would be interested.

If he is your coach then I can't wait to play you guys next year. I don't have any animosity towards him as he did amazing things for our football program.

I realize after hiring Ellis Johnson last year, no USM fan should ever offer an opinion on any school's hire of a head football coach. That said, what the hell are you doing LaTech?????? I am beyond shocked. I wish you the best, but if that man can't recruit in Florida and win in a crappy BE conference, I have to wonder how he is going to win at Tech. I know he won at ECU, but that looks to be more of a fluke than anything. Oh well, good luck. Sure hope it works out for you.

Nope... no fluke. He won with defense. His defensive coordinator while at ECU (Greg Hudson) did not follow him to USF and went to the Seminoles. That's why Skip wasn't successful at USF - he also loves his buddy Todd Fitch, who is an awful OC. If he brings Todd Fitch to LaTech... yikes.

Most of bulldog nation just wants to know why we went with Holtz. I think we should've brought in a spread guy to match our current personnel. I'm more of a reload than rebuild kinda guy and I just don't see Holtz being a spread and offensive guy.

Your experience with Ellis may have played a role in this decision. We were either going to gamble on a hot shot coordinator who has never been a head coach, or go with a guy who has proven he can win in CUSA. It was probably a conservative choice. But I think he'll do fine, Tech's wins/losses don't change much regardless of who the coach is.

RE: Skip Holtz new coach at LaTech???
Holtz was ball-control and defense at ECU, which was a drastic change at the time I though. ECU had never had a great defense under Logan and Tim Rose (this guy should have been fired 2 years earlier and Logan probably would have kept on winning). Holtz is a smart guy and wins with what he has.

With that, every new coach is a flip of a coin. Ellis Johnson had a great resume. Everything, to me, pointed at success. Even at 0-6 it seemed possible to turn it around. That last home game though, showed he was "Orgeron stupid" and really had to go. Glad we play "big boy football" and bought him out.

RE: Skip Holtz new coach at LaTech???
Skip Holtz would have been a fantastic successor to Dooley, but he'll be taking over a team that has been built from the ground up as an air raid offense. How well can he adapt, and how long will he take to install his preferred offense?

I don't honestly care what offense we run, but I hate that we keep drastically changing in coaching styles with every hire. One thing I will look forward to, though, is the return of a competent defense.

He runs a drastically different style of offense than im sure LA Tech is used too. Something similar to 3 runs and a cloud of dust. Someone said that when skip was here he met todd finch and asked him about the offense and it was Skips offense and he called the plays. He is a solid coach if he puts the right assistants around him. Its surprising that he is going to LA tech, not that its a bad school but I didnt think he had many recruiting contacts in that area.

I personally don't agree with the hire! Air raid to possession offense aka downhill runs...I just expected tech to get another high flying OC again. Worked out great last time

How would most ppl compare this hire to S miss monken and Ark states Harsin, WKU's B. Petrino?

Well if he retains Eggan our D-line coach, he has plenty of good contacts in the state and has been the recruiting coordinator for the past few years.

And Dooley ran the 3 runs and a cloud of dust offense too. it sucked.
