He is a solid coach if he puts the right assistants around him. Its surprising that he is going to LA tech, not that its a bad school but I didnt think he had many recruiting contacts in that area.

Well if he retains Eggan our D-line coach, he has plenty of good contacts in the state and has been the recruiting coordinator for the past few years.

And Dooley ran the 3 runs and a cloud of dust offense too. it sucked.

I see Holtz as a Dooley clone.

Left ECU to coach in the Big East... Now he's in Conference USA and ECU is going to the Big East.

Funny how things work out. I wish him well, but La Tech fans better hope that he doesn't bring Todd Fitch with him.

Me too. But Holtz has more wins on his resume.

Yeah, Skip is a smash mouth football coach. Low scoring slow offense.

So is Holtz official?

If so, good hire. Congrats to the Dawgs.

That said, what the hell are you doing LaTech?????? I am beyond shocked. I wish you the best, but if that man can't recruit in Florida and win in a crappy BE conference, I have to wonder how he is going to win at Tech. I know he won at ECU, but that looks to be more of a fluke than anything. Oh well, good luck. Sure hope it works out for you.

Nope... no fluke. He won with defense. His defensive coordinator while at ECU (Greg Hudson) did not follow him to USF and went to the Seminoles. That's why Skip wasn't successful at USF - he also loves his buddy Todd Fitch, who is an awful OC. If he brings Todd Fitch to LaTech... yikes.

I thought it was Fitch too, but I heard from a player that Skip makes the calls. When he was at USC his dad demoted him from OC to quarterbacks coach, so he is not a good play caller.

I will not forget the game against Carolina in Chapel Hill where he ran the wild cat in a series where Dwayne Harris lined up in the QB position and ran the ball up the middle six consecutive plays. We got 14 yards and 1 first down running the exact same play. it was play calling like that, that cost us the game.

Great guy, great speaker, poor offensive coach. If he brings Fitch then LTech should be worried.

I hope everything works well for Louisiana Tech this selection. As a USM fan I am excited about the potential conference rivalry with the Bulldogs that will be renewed and has existed off and on all the way back to the 1930s.

About as special as Greenville.

No, that's a rip on Skip Holtz, not Ruston. That came from what he said when he left ECU.

Congrats La Tech....You guys got a 1st class man to coach your team. I am not sure what went down at USF, it was very surprising to me that Holtz did not take that program to new heights. If he brings some of the guys that were at ECU and USF with him to La Tech you are getting some damn good coaches. Coach Shank is one hell of an offensive line coach. Rick Smith is as good as they come as far as secondary coaches go.

I want Rick Smith back... like, yesterday. He is also a good recruiter.

Congrats to Skip and La Tech: y'all are getting a good coach and, IMHO, a "program builder". Be patient as his style is more akin to Dooley's and right now, y'all are not geared for that type of football.

NOTE: at UConn, he was a "Spread" guy... so who knows?

I am not sure I would say a poor offensive coach...He is just much more conservative on offense than most college coaches these days. He has a good formula to build a winning program but for some reason he could never really get it going at USF. One thing that has really plagued Holtz during his time at ECU and USF is he seems to have an inordinate amount of injuries. I am not sure the reason but it really hurt him at time while he was at both ECU and USF, may just be a coincidence.

Tech had Rick Smith about 10 years ago

Hopefully, that means Skippy has a clue about working with what is left in the cupboard and not blowing things up just for the warm and fuzzy feelings...

Skip a good coach, but a great rep for the school. He did a lot of things outside of ECU while here. I think it's good hire.

RE: Skip Holtz new coach at LaTech???
I think what I like most about hiring Holtz is that he has 13 years of HC experience. Tech has not hired a HC with HC experience since 1980. We usually get a rookie who finds his way in the first couple of years and then is gone after the third year.

Maybe, just maybe if Holtz has some success he will already have the knowledge that the grass is not always greener at another job, and because you win at one place it does not guarantee you will win wherever you go. Maybe he will stay for a while and give us some consistency.
