Bring both in Hudson as AHC that oversees the D and Smith as DC.

Smith is a DB coach and Hudson's specialty is LB's. I'd prefer Smith as AHC and DB coach and Hud as DC and LB coach. I don't think it's going to happen though.

Too easy and makes too much sense...Pirate football can not get out of its own ways at times. It would be nice if someone within the administration would step in and demand a change on defense but I just do not see Terry Holland as that type of AD.

Hell I'd be ok with just bringing in Smith and either making Wiley the DC or Smith the DC. That would be an upgrade as well.

RE: Brian Mitchell is a Horrible DC
Rick Smith was also a Defensive Coordinator for Cincinatti. He definitely has a skill with the Secondary and did a great job with ECU before helping us to the Top 20 in the country with INT's. It also did not hurt that we had 3 future NFL lineman putting pressure on the QB to make those INT passes. He is just one phone call away for ECU as is Hudson with the right offer. It is up to Ruff to mantain the status quo and be loyal to BM or make a decision for the overall success of the FB program

Is it possible to start an email campaign to TH and Ruff about this?

TH is always receptive towards emails and usually replys back. He is fully aware that Hudson and Smith are out there and one would consider an ECU offer while the other would leap at it. Not sure the time table of the new AD being hired but TH normally sits down with Ruff at the end of the season for a review or state of the program chat and I have a hard time believing Defense will not come up. TH is at virtually every game home and away and he definitely catches an ear full from the fans. I know when I was chatting with him at UCF he was dealing with fans complaining about our Defense. Ruff hears it all the time as well but his Coach speak and "I'm as country as a row of corn" local aw shucks routine is not cutting it with most fans anymore. I support Ruff and want him to succeed more then any ECU Coach we have ever hired but he needs to learn that a part of leadership is being able to talk bluntly and realistically to the fanbase. We are not children and it is not throwing your players or coaches under the bus to discuss areas we need to work on. Anybody who has spent 10 seconds watching ECU game film knows our areas of weakness are the secondary and quickness of our LB's on the option along with a host of questionable scheming packages put in at times of the game.

Our secondary was a glaring weakness with two JUCOS having to come in but a well seasoned coach like Rick Smith could certainly go a long ways towards helping us. He also has a ton of recruit contacts in Florida so that would not hurt our cause either with speed on that side of the ball. I have heard people say Brian Mitchell is a great recruiter but so is Rick Smith. I would throw in Hudson as not too shabby a recruiter because he played @ Notre Dame, coached at UCONN, Minnesota, Cincinnati, ECU and Florida St. He also helped coach 3 future NFL lineman, two of which now have Super Bowl Rings.

Not sure how all of this will work out but I hope at a bare minimum that Rick Smith gets rehired at ECU and between he and Ruff the Defense see's improvement next year. Brian Mitchell is a great guy just over his head evidently. I cut him slack because he had a perfect storm nightmare Season 1 with the largest graduating Sr. class in the country and not a lot of talent behind them compounded by key injuries. Year 2 was better but nothing great. Year 3 was a setback in my book especially the Navy game. Beyond frustrating to know exactly what an offense is going to run at you and you can't stop it even with superior athletes.

Fedora had to get rid of Bradford. When he did, 12-2.

I think that is the major frustration of ECU fans. This years team was mediocre at best but our Defense flat out sucked and with even a decent Defense we win 9-10 games. We have a 1st year QB coming back next year with plenty of targets/weapons and an improved OLine. If our Defense had even a pulse we compete for CUSA Championship. We have a fair amount of talent coming back on Defense and potentially some great talent coming on board next year if everything works out.

If we hire a real DC I think we are a 10 win team next year, but if we keep Mitchell around I really think we'll be lucky to win 8 and depending on how much better some of the teams in C-USA are might struggle to win 6.

I agree as this fluke year for an easy schedule may not be repeated again, especially in 2014. If Skip keeps LA Tech on top and Butch Davis starts strong with FIU, and Monken takes off with USM, then we could be in for a very long year.

If Ruff keeps Mitchell I predict Ruff will be fired after 2014. Expectations are going to be sky high next year returning nearly everyone off an 8 win team, and if that idiot is back we will not reach them, and then the first year in the Big East when the competition level goes way up we'll get our teeth kicked in.
