Pretty interesting. Good Halliday-Resnick type exercise of seeing cons of energy and momentum. That last one is crucial to understanding it all.

Is it the magnetism "charge" or the momentum of the cause of the off-shooting ball? Interesting also that it apparently has a kick with the backfire of the two disc looking magnets.

It is kinetic. In the last little bit the magnets rapidly accelerate towards the bearing resulting in an impact that shoots one ball away and (Newtonian physics) shoots everything else in the other direction with equal force.

You could turn this into a real projectile firing weapon with larger magnets and a larger "core" mass.

A magnetic accelerator would work much better as a weapon, GTS...

It's the magnetism "charge" that converts to kinetic energy. The kick back is the conservation of momentum.

And be impractical on both expense, size, and weight. You could make a gaussian bb-gun in a non-unreasonable package (but still not practical compared to a traditional air pump).

I wouldn't be surprised if it's also illegal to have a railgun (magnetic accelerator). The USN has some real world shell firing railguns.

I know about the Navy's rail guns. I remember when they were first proposed, and followed the development of the weapons...

And as far as being impractical, that's depends on it's purpose. It would be a great way to send equipment and supplies into space as a launch platform. The major cost would be the construction, and right of way acquisition. But it would be fairly energy efficient, since much of the energy expended can be recaptured and recycled...

Don't make Hulk angry by telling him he's illegal.
