UC one of 56 colleges with $1 billion + endowment
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060123/ap_o...endowments
"The other eight universities passing the $1 billion endowment mark were: University of Wisconsin Foundation, University of Nebraska and Foundation, University of Delaware, University of Cincinnati, Amherst College, Smith College, Southern Methodist University, and Baylor College of Medicine"

what does this have to do with anything?
Nancy wants us to be like yale and harvard... guess this is just proof how far behind we are?
harvard and Yale have more than 25BIL in endowments with less students...
not to mention.. endowments, in general are emarked for the area they are donated to. This doesn't mean anything to the athletic dept, unless they overrun their athletic dept budget (which is looking likely) and they have to "steal" from the endowment.

You are probably right that the endowment money must be invested or spent in the area of it's intended donation.
But, I would guess that the interest could be spent any way the University sees fit.
Based on the stated average interest earned in the endowments over 1B, that means $138,000,000 in interest alone. That is not a bad little booty to start with before any other income (tuition, undesignated donations, UCAT donations).
Does anybody know what the current budget is for UC?

I think these endowments are just a sign of how much students are being overcharged. I want a school that is concerned with providing the best possible education for students at the lowest cost possible (relative to the value of the services). If a school jacks up tuition every year and then brags about building a huge stockpile of cash, to me it just means they have their priorities out of whack.
Harvard's endowment is so large that they now could make it 100% tuition free in perpetuity on interest alone. YEAH, THEY COULD OPERATE FOREVER WITHOUT EVER TOUCHING THE PRINCIPLE OF THE ENDOWMENT!
Harvard decided that a "tuition free" Harvard would lower the status, cache and perceived value of a Harvard degree.

One of the main reason's for Harvard's large endowment was due to the brilliance of the team investing the endowment.
What does it say about College Education when organizations have such huge endowments but keep increasing tuition by 2x or 3x the inflation rate?
My prediction: Don't know when but Higher Education's Bubble is going to burst like the Internet Craze a few years ago. UD just upped their Room, Board and Tuition to $31,900 per YEAR. At $125,000+, what kind of ROI are kid's getting for that?
