Then the next 3 we probably won't travel well to, but if we win 1 or 2 of those, the next game at the Rock will be a fun atmosphere, as long as the boys are having fun and we don't look like a repeat of 2012.
I agree, if we win, people will come.
Long-term, I worry about our ability to recruit with schedules like that.
I also worry about our attractiveness as an opponent. Nebraska, A&M, etc. were willing to pay a premium (e.g. games at USM) to play us because we wouldn't trash their strength of schedule. With that schedule, we're poison for any school that has BCS aspirations.
I think USM football has lost about 20 years' worth of progress since the defections started (in 2005). I hate to be pessimistic... but thinking about next year really turns my stomach.
Monken better win and win fast.

The silver lining is that there are tens of thousands of people- maybe hundreds- who still care. We'll see how long that lasts. We have not lost our fan base at this time. There is a point at which people will hide their USM stuff in the closet, but 90% of us still aren't there.

actually to someone like me the NCAA really hurt programs like USM back in the 80s when BYU won the National Championship. The big boys were determined that wouldn't happen again and at the time USM was right there with BYU and the others. Notice how we have dropped off ever since. No it isn't Conference USA because it is what kept us from fighting to fill our schedule when the big boys were too scared of us. Reality is we are being put in our place by the big boys.

The silver lining better be leaving The Rock with a win at least once and hopefully 5 total times this year. Personally the only tough game I see is the MTSU game. A silver lining that you won't see is that of the former coach's hair as well as his old assistant coaches silver hair.

Silver Lining:
USM's short term need is to win, and there are 6 potential home wins in 2013. It's a schedule made for an 0-12 team (no disrespect intended....everyone with a pulse knows that was an aberation season) because it allows an opportunty to re-build off home victories. The schedule reverses the following year, so it's a short-term issue that really couldn't have happened at a better time.
The danger lurking on that home schedule is if you get spanked at home by one of the new teams.

depending on how well the team travels, we could even win our division with a little luck. I know ECU and Marshall will be tough and UAB has been a thorn in our side, but we beat those 3 we could win the division.

That should be a neat trick, considering we only have 5 home games. Maybe I'm missing something.

RE: 2013 Southern Miss football schedule
The Rock will have a good crowd for Texas St. To keep them we need to hang 70pts on them.
We also need to play 2of the 3 ooc games tight, blow out the two florida schools & we should have a decent crowd for mtsu in a tight game. North Texas for the final home ame could have a decent crowd if we are playing for something.
We should have some thrilling away conference games & hopefully Monken can get the UAB monkey off our back.
7 wins 5 losses
if we get 8 or more wins i wont argue!

It's brutal. At best we go 4-3 but I could easily see us going 0-7 or 1-6 on the road.

The silver lining for me is lord willing it will be season no 34 without missing a home game. I will still write checks no matter what league we are in.

Wow @ your away schedule. Wow!
It wasn't set up that way when it was planned a few years back. The Nebraska game was suppose to be a home game as part of a 2 for 1 but was sold to Nebraska for $2.1 million or so. We go back to Lincoln again in several years for the final game of the series. The Arkansas game was a late addition to fill the void of La Tech joining C-USA as we were suppose to be playing in Ruston this year as an OOC game. Boise St is a return game for them coming to hattiesburg this past year. Texas St is the "wildcard" home game we traditionally play. In years past our OOC scheduling had been 1 home buy game, 2 home and home BCS teams (previous games were Kansas, Virginia and Louisville) and 1 buy road game for a payday.
