RE: Missouri State getting ready for FBS, $40 million football stadium upgrade coming
To be honest, they really only have 3 places to go if they're looking to move up.

1) CUSA - Springfield isn't much of a 'market', by CUSA standards. With Tulsa in the confernce, this would have made some more sense.
2) MAC - Nearest school is Northern Illinois, and the conference appears to be reaching East, not West.
3) Sun Belt - Most likely fit, especially if Arkansas State and/or WKU remain in the Belt after this iteration

But from a Sun Belt perspective, this is good news. Another public school in our neighborhood wishing to upgrade. That gives the Belt 5 move up options in the neighborhood.

1) Ga Southern
2) Appy
3) Missouri State
4) JMU
5) Jacksonville State

That is why it is puzzling their football team has always been horrible in FCS.

Recruiting would pick up though at the FBS level substantially.

The question is would they be willing to leave the Missouri Valley? It sounds like they are years away from having the stadium changes in place anyways.

rumors have had Creighton going to the C7 which would be a big blow to the conference. I love the MVC and don't want to move to a lower basketball league but we won the MVC regular season in 2010 and had an RPI of 21 a few years earlier and neither of those things helped us get an at-large bid to the NCAA so being in the MVC seems to hold us back when trying to get respect from the NCAA selection committee so we might be more willing to leave the MVC than we were a few years ago.

Are you really going to get more respect from the NCAA selection committee in a CUSA without Memphis?

It would be a decent geographic fit for Mo State, though. There would be a good natural rivalry with Tulsa.

Isn't Tulsa as good as gone for the nBE?

If Tulsa is indeed the 12th all-sports member of the NBE, and Navy is still on board as #13 in football, then Missouri State makes tons of sense as #14 for football. Require 4-6 games a year in basketball, and the NBE gets some quality OOC games as well.

They really do look like a good fit for CUSA. MAC maybe.

I really look for the Sun Belt to focus on existing FBS teams (NMSU, Idaho) and/or the best football teams available (App State, Ga State).

The SBC passed CUSA last year and I don't think they want to be the worse FBS football league anymore.

If schools like this continue to move up to FBS, there is no way the Big Five can contract. They'll lose voting control over football matters within the NCAA. That's at lease one reason why all this ACC implosion talk is overblown.

Actually what the Gang of 5 have to worry about are two possibilities:
1) FBS/FCS distinction gets thrown out, making G of 5 a Gang of 15 sharing the same money and status.
2) The Big 4 or 5 simply leave the NCAA.

Neither will happen. Big 5 just won lotto and the winnings were handed to them buy the Gang of 5.

Big 5: "Dont like the BCS you say? Sure sure , we can come up with some accommodation..."

I never say anything is impossible but Notre Dame joining the SEC is more likely than either of those, for a lot of reasons.

You will see changes, like those that are being proposed in recruiting, reflecting the reality that some schools simply have advantages over other schools, but this is more to create separation between the haves and have-nots within the power conferences. That will be the focus as we now enter the era of the 'power programs', who more than anything do not want parity in their own conference.

All the talk and all the rumors say that it is a done deal but yet nothing official. Why? If its going to happen then why hasn't it happened already? Seems like the logical thing to do but maybe there is a more eastern candidate for that 12th spot. Army? UMass?

CUSA if Tulsa is in it would be the first choice for sure. With all of the Texas schools it would make sense. Sun Belt with Arkansas State and Western Kentucky is nice, we have history with them. MAC we are affilates in field hockey and swimming. So we have ties there as well.

I always wondered why a state with well over six million people only has one FBS school. I live in Miss now and even they have three.

Or New Jersey or Massachusetts for that matter. As a St. Louis native, I've always wondered the same thing, although that probably has to do with the fact that Mizzou has always been at the top of the educational tree, while the directional schools/Missouri system schools just were kind of there for their communities and statewide for certain programs. Missouri State has just been the first to substantially grow out of them, though in an alternate dimension UMKC, SEMO, or SLU would have a Division I football team. Even WashU had a "Division I" program in the early 20th century in the Big Eight.

No kidding. Politics? I must say I don't like to see many FCS move up to pressure the bigger conferences any more....or maybe they aren't pressured because their pie is cut already and FCS move ups is just hurting the lower five more which weakens some of the conferences more. I wish some of the MAC schools could be go down to FCS so some of the bigger FCS schools could move up without watering down the FBS division.

Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock would push hard for the Bears if they were to make the move. Can actually bus to Springfield.

that is a logical falicy..

New York has only 3 FBS schools and a population way bigger and less centralized than Missouri.

Syracuse - Power Conference
Army - Service Academy
Buffalo - Mid Major

Any college football fan in Missouri is already a tiger fan. So while MSU *could* find support it's not a given.

Not exactly true. While there is alot of Tiger fans in state, there are alot of Kansas, K-State, Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State and Oklahoma fans as well. Not to mention the thousands of alumni that would go to games and watch on tv if we were in FBS. Alot would stop being Wal-Mart fans of the other big regional schools. There is a market in Missouri for a school to get 25k to 40k in attendance if done right. Heck we average around 10k now with a lousy FCS team.

New York is also much more of a pro sports culture while Springfield, MO is very southern in culture. KC and STL are both a 2-3 hour drive from Springfield so the 6 Million in the state sounds like a good selling point but only a few alums from those cities would drive down for games. MO State would really need to rely on the greater Springfield area for support. Southwest MO has roughly 1 million people which is enough to support an FBS team.

Also thinking that most fans in MO are already Mizzou fans is also not true. MU lost a lot of fans in springfield when they put up a fight against MSU changing its name in 2005 and they refuse to play MSU in basketball which makes them even more of the bad guy team in Springfield. I don't know any MU fans in Springfield outside of Alums. You also have to consider going to a MU game from Springfield is a longer drive than going to a U. Arkansas, KC Chiefs, or STL Rams game and from Joplin, MO going to a game at OK. St and OU are also a shorter drive than a MU game.
