RE: Big East signs with ESPN confirmed--McMurphy twitter
Jersey Guy says As one source at the Big East said on Saturday, “ESPN over matched the offer. The deal they offered in terms of exposure is better than the deal we have now in football. It was more than fair.”

I looked up the 2011 Big East football TV schedule(bigeast.org), and counted home games on the different networks and tried to pay attention to games more or less than 7 days apart. I got 8 Saturday ESPN/2/ABC games, 10 Thursday/Friday ESPN/2 games (counting opening and Thanksgiving weekend), 6 Saturday ESPN-U games and 1 Friday ESPN-U game. That's 25 games. I'm interested to see how the exposure is going to be better.

Agree 100%. Time to put up or shut up.

Some of those midweek games were awesome. You're pretty much guaranteed to be the only game on and they are obviously all night games. I'm sure most people can afford to take a day off work once or twice a season and make the best of it. It's not as bad as you guys are making it out to be.

Oh yes it is. It's the absolute worst of all situations to have to play a mid-week football game. SOME students stay away (small problem 'cause that's not many)....a lot of locals don't come because they have small kids who want to go but with school the next day momma wins that fight....many many many MANY out of towner's stay away because it's not ONE day off but typically two --- and since it's on television ??????

Mid-week football games absolutely suck.

I'm certainly glad SOUTHERN MISS didn't pay $5mil + only to find ourselves back playing on Tuesday night.

Overall with the loss of local revenue like fewer tickets, concessions, parking, etc. mid-week games cost schools money. Now some argue the exposure is worth the loss in revenue but then they aren't the ones paying the bills every month

the Boise games that did not sell out were the mid-week games and attendance dropped off, yet Boise valued the exposure more. I am sure this value proposition is different for each school. If I don't make much on TV I want the home game atmosphere. If TV is paying Big Bucks then yea give me some mid-week games and exposure as the money is fine.

A school like Boise should be less affected due to being in a metro area where many of thier fans live nearby. Schools in more rural locations require thier fans to travel in from other locations. I would think the mid-week games would hit thier attendance harder.

I sort of agree. I think we will "sack up" and turn out bigtime for any conference game during the week. Maybe we won't sell out on Wed night, but we'll have around 45,000.

agree. Schools in more rural settings where fans drive more to games are hurt by mid week games in the attendance department more. MWC also tried to minimize mid-week games for this reason

I am SO glad we only have to deal with being in a mid major conference for one more year. 2014 can't get here soon enough. Soon we'll be playing real teams and get a real TV deal, not playing bush league second rate backyard "squads" with a crappy TV contract thanks to the hilariously awful additions Marinatto made. Thanks for nothing, Meatball!

There's a bright side to midweek games. I remember a midweek game about 10 years ago with FSU at Louisville. At that time, most of the country didn't even know Louisville played FB. But they beat FSU in a close game in monsoon conditions. Suddenly, everyone knew about Louisville FB.

When you're the only game on TV Wed/Thurs/Fri, it can be huge for your program. That's better than one of 40 games Saturday afternoon on ESPN 3.

Morgantown isn't exactly rural, nor is it isolated.

I have to drive 2 hours each way and certain times of the month I wouldn't be able to go to the game under any circumstances, so yes I have a huge issue with mid-week games. I don't buy season tickets with the concern about how many people can watch them on TV.

Was there someone else out there to add? Because the alternative to adding the crummy teams that were added was to fold the football league.

You could argue details at this point like SMU over ECU, but it's pretty clear that there weren't 3 FBS teams to replace Syracuse, Pitt and West Virginia (and TCU) who would have made any difference.

wtf are you talking about? UL is getting out before the BE is officially relegated to "mid-major" status.

But not before it starts to get PAID like a midmajor. Unless the C-7 presidents vote down the deal.

I really don't think the C7 presidents have a vote quite frankly.

So you HAVEN'T been playing real teams since joining the Big East?

Very arrogant post. You do know UofL VOTED for and APPROVED all adds prior to leaving right?

Now there's a piece of leverage I hadn't considered. If the C-7 can block the ESPN deal, then they have the ability to demand some concessions in exchange for not blocking the deal, right?
