With Indiana losing (again)...
Will Gonzaga finally reach #1 if they take care of business this week?

It's hard to argue that another team would be more deserving at this point. It looks like they'll lock up the #1 seed in the west before they even play a game in their conference tourney.

Who was the last team in a non-power conference to reach #1? I'm assuming Memphis?

A week or so ago a talking head on ESPN had Florida as West's #1 seed with Gonzaga in the top 5 AND ahead of Florida in the AP poll 01-wingedeagle

I'm sure they did. Fortunately for us, the season gets played out before teams are seeded. Outside of losing their remaining two regular season games and their first conference tournament game, I don't see how that spot isn't Gonzaga's at this point.

Playing at BYU will be challenging for the Zags. The added pressure of potentially being #1 next week won't help.

Florida SOS 22
Gonzaga SOS 79

Florida Top Wins 12
Gonzaga Top Wins 10

That's the difference there. If Gonzaga wins out they should be a 1 seed as they will have 30 wins.

I don't pay attention to SOS for power conferences. Those schools/conferences are always overated and receive bias. SEC is having a down year and the RPIs are still high -_- The top wins is more telling. I see it as (not having paid attention to Florida recently)

North - Indiana
South - Florida
East - Duke
West - Gonzaga

He is just assuming the selection committee will screw Gonzaga...pretty sensible on his part.

Memphis ended up with a final rank of 4 in 2006, 5 in 2007, 2 in 2008, and 3 in 2009.

They were ranked no. 1 for 5 weeks in 2008 until they were beaten by no. 2 Tennessee. That's the last time they were no. 1. I think that's the last time a non-power conf team was no. 1.

As far as seeding goes, they were a no. 1 in 08, and perhaps another year as well.

In the second week of the season 2011-2012, they were ranked 8. As far as I know that's the highest ranking they've had with Pastner.

This site will go back for decades and give you the ranking of each team week by week, plus the final rankings if you want to search your own team.

Zags are more of a top 5-10 team than #1.

It'll still be fun to see. I've always had a soft spot for them even as most turned their head away from the cute underdog story. What they have been able to do can't even be done at some major schools so props to them.

For what it's worth, I agree with you. When I fill my brackets out, it is very doubtful that I'll have Gonzaga going to the Final Four.
