Because we paid the damn consultants man, and they told us to put a number in it. People need that number to know who we are, don't you get it. 04-rock

The United Revolving Door conference. You can figure out the acronym yourself.

If you're going to go TURD, you may as well go BM (Big Metro).

Personally, I like the teams. The conference has a shot if it has a decent support structure. Whether we have that, is questionable. Nevertheless, if we start off with an absurd name it's over before it starts.

We need a name that lines with the respected conferences out there. We're fighting a perception war. Anything less than a name that is congruent with our competition will be a disaster (almost on the level of giving up the Big East brand).

IMO, AAC fits the bill. Atlantic Athletic Conference

The Metro. No other name is needed.

Quote:Last week ESPN reported that America 12 Conference was a favorite for the league's new name and the conference's law firm had purchased several domain names with variations of America 12 in it. However, the league's presidents responded that they do not favor a name with a number in it and are asking its marketing group for a name that highlights the metro nature of the new schools in the league, a source said.

Just sayin'

RE: Absolute Best Name for new conference
"The Metro Conference" aka "Metro" is solid. However part of me thinks it's more solid to those of us over 35 who actually remember and were part of the old Metro. To kids today it's just a punchline for "metrosexual" -- oh well. I won't complain if it's "Metro." I will, however, not like "Big Metro" or some such crap.

The reason I didn't hate America 12 is b/c it abbreviates so well to A12. Sounds familiar, sounds legit - blends in with others Big 10, Big 12, A10, etc....

One thing to consider is how committed you are to the concept of 12 and or Metropolitan locales. Even if you lose UConn and Cincy -- who is next up? Is it Southern Miss, is it Charlotte, is it FIU, etc.... If you're committed to 12, keep the number. Etc...

RE: NEW CONFERENCE NAME
First time poster.......Just brainstorming here.....using "Union" instead of "Conference" can separate ourselves from sounding like other conferences.

1. American Metro Union- combines the new and the old and our hopeful unity.
2. Metro Union
3. Mason-Dixon Union- The only common geographic element that connects our schools is what divides us. The Mason-Dixon Line.
Regions of the United States
Another fun fact: 2013 is the 250 year anniversary of the Mason-Dixon Line.
4. The Union- Simple but I sort of like it. I just wouldn't want it to be called "The U" for obvious reasons.

Question? I mostly stayed out of the conference name threads, and haven't read this one because it's so long. But is the America 12 name officially out, or are they just considering alternatives?

I don't think anyone can say for sure, but I would say it's still in play. But there are several suggestions that are also in the mix, too.

RE: NEW CONFERENCE NAME
The Metro Conference is great!!

You have the founding members of the original Metro conference in this conference, in addition to other members. You already have a logo that you only need to update for the times. You have a history as a great bball conference, which would be accepted since there is overlap in members. You can start anew without the tarnish of the BE football name (I believe it is unfair, but it is there nonetheless). And, the name is strong and doesn't sound like you are a midmajor conference, a pretend big conference, or any part of CUSA.

During the first year (especially during the bball tourney) the metro should use footage of the old metro and the new metro to show the overlap and transition. Honestly, you could probably milk some historical value off of UL before they move to the ACC.

. . . ignoring that most of the Metro Conference merged with former Metro members in the Great Midwest Conference to form Conference USA, but yeah, other than that, the failed Metro Conference isn't Conference USA at all. 03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao
