My ideal conference:

Virginia Tech
Virginia
North Carolina
North Carolina State
West Virginia
Maryland
Pittsburgh
Penn State
Rutgers

This is a geographically compact conference of nine Mid-Atlantic schools all within reasonable driving distance of one another. A good mix of "basketball-centric" and "football-centric" schools with some potentially super rivalries. All are major state universities with either a tradition of great football or the potential for great FB. Nine schools ONLY allows four home FB games and four away. In basketball, all play each other twice with the BB tournament in Philadelphia. That's my idea of the PERFECT conference.

How about a mix of a bunch of former Eastern Indys, Original Big East, and Lousiville (who seems to have earned a spot at the table):

Rutgers
Syracuse
Boston College
Pitt
Penn State
WVU
Louisville
Virginia Tech
East Carolina
USC (Gamecocks)
Florida State
Miami

Lol, agreed. But you won't find anyone but ND fans like us that think that way.

I wish that all schools were independent in all sports.

I say that knowing that ND's basketball fortunes were waning under the later Digger Phelps and the John McCleod years as an independent and that the Big East helped reverse that trend.

I still liked ND basketball better in the Seventies when it was independent.

Nope I agree with you. I miss ECU's independent days. I wish it was a viable option for ECU to be independent again.

I will let Pitt slide since they used to be private but how are Army, Navy, and Air Force private? Unless it is a rank joke but then it does not work with Navy for instance so...

While military academies are government backed schools, they are hardly open to the public. They have always essentially functioned as a small private liberal arts and sciences (martial arts too) schools. Besides the idea here was to demonstrate how even if the Big 10, SEC, and PAC exclude these schools that with the right mix (Notre Dame, Baylor, Duke, Syracuse, etc.) a functioning scheduling alliance can be created among the smaller private schools that are excluded from the discussion among the large conferences who are looking for numbers in viewers more than at academics, tradition, history in the sport, and contributions to the arts. Obviously Northwestern, Vanderbilt, and Stanford among a few others could have been included, but then they are grandfathered in. Miami is private as well.

Besides this was a fantasy exercise.

Why Akron instead of, say Toledo?

They're pretty interchangeable, I just chose Akron mostly because of the basketball, partially because of their new stadium and successful soccer program. Buffalo or UMass could also be down the list as potential members, though in a perfect world, we could have Penn State, WVU, and Kentucky join.

Interesting that you mention Akron's soccer success among the reasons why you would choose them, especially since Miami doesn't have a men's team.
