I don't want a jelly doughnut, aber Ich mochten zwei beir zu getrunken bitte! Ein Beck's aus das swartz fur mich und ein fur meinem freund.
Translation:
Ich möchte keinen Berliner (or Krapfen as we are in Bavaria saying), aber zwei Bier bitte. Eines (whats's that "das swartz"?) für mich und eines für meinen Freund.

When I have been living and working in the US in the Mid Nineties I heard a lot of Americans trying to speak some German. Mostly some old war related stuff like sayings from Schulz (AAACHTUUUNG) in the TV series Hogan's Heroes. By the time it was quite boring.
Havy you been in Germany stationed?
I couldn't remember how to order the dark beer. That's my attempt.
I think comrade is probably more appropriate than friend so I changed it. No, I've been to Holland but didn't have the time while on business to go to Germany. I've always wanted to go. So, when my daughter wanted to go there to study, I was pleased to send her. I minored in German years and years ago as part of a B.A. in preparation for a military languages school, but life took me in another direction. I still would like to go but family pulls me in other directions now. My Bucket List (things I wish to do before I die) for travel would be the Galapagos Islands, New Zealand, and Germany. I'd like to take the Clipper (sailing ship) they offer to the Galapagos.

Forgive no umlauts I never switch the keyboard settings for them.

P.S. Thanks for the correction. I don't think I was off too badly for a language I haven't used in 30 plus years. Plus, I've long since given my Langenscheidts Dictionary away. I've always been glad that Germans were not language snobs like some of the French are.
Dark beer is just bier in Germany. But I think you're talking about bockbier...

I like bochbier too. Beck's Dark started as a boch I'm sure, but is not really labeled as such today. About all I have these days if I can find it fresh is Guinness. It's ruined my desire for about anything else. Two pints with some hummus is a big evening for me now. And the Germans have many heffeweissens and some pilsners as well, it's not all dark beer. I know it's not a German beer but the best tasting beer I had in Europe (other than Guinness) was not a dark beer. It was Heineken right across the street from their brewery in Amsterdam.

RE: New Conference Name Proposed for America12
I spent 3 months TDY on a ski patrol along the German-Swiss-Austrian border. They had a bach bier that was served at this place near the foot of Zugspitze that was served steaming hot in 2 liter steins. It looked like black strap molasses, and really warmed you up after 3 days in the cold and snow. It packed a heavy punch too. It would knock you on your ass, if you didn't eat something while drinking it. Although the natives drank it like water...

That's a great life memory. I envy you that one. I've always wanted to live in a village where at the end of the day you gather with your neighbors at the Pub, or its local iteration, for a pint or two, and to hash out the news of the day. I think our culture misses that, and misses it badly. Lives and community are built over those pints and discussions.
