App State to Sun Belt Wed.
From @AppTrailWSJ:

Appalachian State will accept an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference this week, probably on Wednesday, according to a source at ASU.

I'm sorry to see ASU leave the Southern.
Beware all of you Sun Belt fans. The weather in Boone is wild and can change two or three times a day. And it can really get cold on top of the mountain even in September or October.

RE: App State to Sun Belt Wed.
Boone, NC (Sports Network) - Appalachian State's premier FCS program could be ready to move up to the FBS level.

Reporter Tommy Bowman of the Winston-Salem Journal tweeted on Monday that a source at Appalachian State said the Southern Conference program will accept an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference this week, possibility announcing a move on Wednesday.

The Mountaineers program is the only one in FCS history to win three straight national titles - from 2005 to '07 under former coach Jerry Moore - and has won at least a share of seven of the last eight Southern Conference titles.

Appalachian State has led the FCS in attendance in five of the past six years, including an average of 26,358 fans per game this past season, when the Mountaineers had an 8-4 record and made the national playoffs for the eighth straight season.

The SoCon's other's big power, six-time FCS national champion Georgia Southern, also is pursuing a move up to the FBS.

I'm thrilled for App. App has deserved an FBS invite, and it's nice to see a program that wanted and deserved it get it.

Here's my question. Is it just App State and Ga Southern, not a 3rd team? That only leaves them with 9 FB members and 11 all-sports members.

Until WKU leaves they're at 10. If could be possible that the nBE may not ask Tulsa to join and therefore no WKU move to CUSA.
If WKU leaves, then NMSU for fb-only seems probable.

JMU's name is thrown around on the SBC board, but rumors on the SBC board say that western teams want New Mexico State.

It should be JMU for the 3rd team. Then William and Mary can join the Patriot.

CUSA, MAC, Big whatever and MWC should have moved faster on expansion. Now they will have to share their smaller piece of the pie more ways.

Great move by the Sun Belt adding a quality program with fantastic support. Same with Ga. Southern.

Actually CUSA and the Belt moved way the hell too fast. nBe was grabbing things like a 5yo on a sugar fix. The idea that all these schools will make the pie bigger for their conferences is insane.

The MAC brought in UMass and has room to lose or gain one FBall school. That's a nice place to be at in an unstable world.

I think the Sun Belt moves were more about survival as WKU is all but gone and UL and ASU seem on the short list out as well. A small piece of the pie is better than no piece of the pie if the league folds. The other leagues though totally jumped the gun.

These moves make sense... I guess I should be more specific and say CUSA was the one making really bad moved. The fact ASU was not *the first* school approached by the belt blows my mind and I think that is what I was talking about.

RE: App State to Sun Belt Wed.
So do they do the Georgia State thing and start the two-year clock ticking now, become an FBS transitional in 14 and become full-on Sun Belt members in 15, or do they do the Old Dominion thing and take one more shot at a national title in 13, then start the clock to become an FBS transitional playing a Sun Belt schedule in 15, but not a full FBS member until 16?

I actually think they were waiting on CUSA last time.

This is a good move for the Sun Belt. If and when WKU leaves then add NMSU for all sports. Then stop.

2 good gets for the Sunbelt as far as FCS moveups go. They both have great fan support and winning traditions.

I actually have to think maybe WKU could have second thoughts with App St. coming??
